I've put some real grunt trying to pull it from its yoke by hand but it won't shift.

Is there a secret circlip in there??

The ferrule on the end of the outer cable has serrations that seat inside of the retaining bracket. Over time and given certain conditions, the ferrule will rust onto the bracket.

Try popping the rubber cover off the end of the ferrule to see what you are dealing with, apply penetrant, and also see if manupulating the split in the bracket releases the ferrule. The ferrule pushes out towards the front of the car.

Why remove it? Is it sticky and in need of replacement? Agree with Simon re approach to removal - they are pressed in lightly.
