    Default Seeking 4 parts

Hopefully some of the gurus here can help us. The 4 is back from the body shop, no rust! We are trying to source an engine rebuild kit for an 845cc, also looking for a clutch disc and a metal cam shaft idle gear. Any help would be appreciated.

Try Caravelle Motor Imports in Melbourne. Probably your only hope in Australia.

Melun Retro Passion, Neo Retro, both in France will have all of what you need. There are others in the US and Spain, but the French Websites are reasonably easy to follow and find the parts and the prices.

Melun Retro Passion have the following examples.

Piston and sleeve Kit 256 Euro
    Crank bearing set 30
    Valve guides 4 for 36
    Inlet Valves 4 for 31
    Ex Valves 4 for 37

All easily available as Alan said. Why go for a metal timing gear? They are noisy and the fibre ones are fine for many years (mine is 44 years old) with plenty of oil changes.

Thanks for your assistance! We were advised by past owner's of 4's to replace the timing gear with metal. Resto on the way, photos to follow. Thanks again.

I know someone that had an aluminium gear machined. It was VERY noisy. The car wasn't red in colour by chance?

Make sure when ordering that you specify whether you require a copper liner sealed kit or a paper liner sealed kit, also whether it is a coarse spline or fine spline clutch. I suspect that your car would have an 800-01 engine number circa 110xxx, with a copper liner seal kit and coarse spline clutch. I've never seen an aluminium timing gear though, and just figured where available people converted them to the later chain type set-up.

Try Caravelle for the parts first, that is where I obtained all my mechanical parts from (going on a few years ago now) but I would'nt imagine the parts are fast moving, and if you are lucky they may have some stock left over.

Then try the other places Alan has suggested.

    Also have a look at Clementine's R4 forum Clementine's Renault 4 Garage

There is plenty of advice on there, and also likely information on where the best place is for parts nowadays.

At first it was red, then white in a second incarnation.

A bit of a whine was nothing compared to all the other noises Fred used to make!

I wonder what happened to that engine?

Given the time frame, if it was red, the whine would have mellowed, become more balanced and been greatly appreciated.
If it was white, it will be oxidised and it's probably time to chuck it out.

    Spoken like a true oenophile.

Come to think of it, Fred was Red originally, all his bits transferred to the white one I got from you, then that got painted yellow by the next owner.

So to anyone who is looking at this thread. Any ideas what happened to a yellow over white 1964 R4 that had disc brakes (made out of R10 rears) and a really noisy engine?

    Cheers, Pottsy

Not sure if they are related to your inquiry, but I saw one yellow one at the 2012 Grand French car day in Brisbane and another one in the 2013 event. Both bright yellow. I think they were two different cars as they had different rego, different wheels.
