Default Scenic RX4 gearbox woes, advice sought

    Hello all,
I'm new to both the forum and to Renaults.

I have just recently bought at 2003 scenic RX4 4wd with 106,000km on the clock.

Around 2 weeks ago when driving on the freeway in 5th gear I noticed a whine when not accelerating that hadn't been there before. A bit of mucking around changing gears identified that it only happens in 5th gear. Over the space of about 5kms it turned from a whine to what sounded like someone had put zipties on the spokes of a bicycle when coasting. It hasn't jumped out of 5th gear at all. I drained the oil took off the end cap, checked the end nut, replaced the oil and tested it (shock and amazement it didnt magically resolve itself! I put it in 5th for long enough to determine the noise was still there, which was about 2 seconds)

Here is what it looks like inside.

    <a href="http://s829.photobucket.com/user/Lachyjnr/media/RX46.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz218/Lachyjnr/RX46.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo RX46.jpg"/></a>

The 5th gear nut doesn't appear to be loose. The glaring issue is the chunks of teeth that have come off the 5th gear.

    So my questions are

Is this likely to be the bearing immediately behind the 5th gear? (and therefore a relatively inexpensive repair of just bearing and replacing the 5th gear/whatever the other gear is called?)

Does anyone know of a mechanic in Adelaide who is reliable and regularly does Renault gearbox work?

Does anyone have any clues about the likely cost of the repair if it is replacing the gear and the bearing?

Am I better off going to a Renault dealer for this bit? (bearing in mind that I only paid $4k for the car so am probably not heaps keen on spending a lot on it)

Will it implode if I drive it around as along as I don't use 5th?

    Thank you in advance

    Lachlan

I had to replace a gearbox on a 2WD Scenic and was recommended to someone in the Northern suburbs but I can't recall the name
i'll look tonight and get back to you.
I ended up putting in a second hand box so I didn't use him in the end.

    Hi Don,
Its a bit hard to explain exactly how long it was.
It was about 20 minutes in total of driving time, however when I noticed the whine I spent a few minutes mucking around with different speeds, gears etc trying to identify the source of the noise. Once I worked out it was only in 5th I left it in 4th So I guess I probably drove in 5th at 100km/h for about 5 minutes? about 10 minutes after doing 60km/h I changed back into 5th (for about 5 seconds) and it sounded a lot more clattery but that may have been because I was going a lot slower and had the window down?

I'm guessing if I had spent much more time in 5th it would have destroyed the gear pretty quickly from the state it is in now.

    Hi Mike,

Thanks that would be much appreciated.

    Kind Regards,
    Lachlan

For "modern era" (post-ish 2001) Renault repairs go to Manta Automotive Services, 11/4 Deacon Ave Richmond. Phone 8234 8688.

Steve will likely be familiar with the fairly common Rx4 problem, and be able to advise on the various options available.
