    Default Renault 12 Virage Availability

    Hi

As I haven't seen any Renault 12 Virages for sale for quite some time I'm wondering if these cars have largely dissapeared or are there still good cars out there?

Id there a Registrer for Renault 12s?

Had you come and volunteered at the last RCCA run motorkhana you could have bought one for quite a reasonable price.
Price guide ran from Cheeky to Generous on a sliding scale.

It sold on the day, and has recently been delivered to its' new owner I believe (not mine I should add).

Be careful with buying a Virage, as they can make an early 70's Electrophoresis stuff-up Renault look like it was made from 18/8 stainless. Especially if it has been standing at grass. A lot of them included poor quality recycled steel in the body, so the doors and guards rust easily, it is a bit of a lottery. Also if the body has been leaking, water gets below the bitumen sheets on the floor, rusting the steel fairly invisibly because of the thick bitumen coating on the underside of the car.

Find a good one and you will enjoy it, a bad one will result in you taking a bath. They are lighter to drive than a 15/17, just not as cool looking. Also watch the faded metallic paint, as a decent paint job will likely cost more than the car.

That it did Kevin, for the reasonable asking price. ;-)

    Thanks guys for your comments.

My son (13 years old) said that his favorite cars besides the 15 are the 12 and the 504.

I've been thinking of selling the 15 so I asked about the 12s but from what you say I'd be better off getting a 504 if I ever sell the 15. Starting to think i might be best off keeping the 15.

    Regards

    Alan

The only reason to sell a 15 to get a 12 instead is if you need more space and want a 12 wagon. That is a good wagon, by the way. Light, nimble, and capable of taking abuse without a problem.

The Sierra engine was great improvement to the R12 but the 1975 GL 1177 was definitely my favorite evolution of this car.

They are still out there. I looked at a reasonably tidy Virage when I was looking for a club car around 18months ago, right down to having the original rear window stick of the selling dealer Balwyn Motors.

The paint being gold had faded in spots, had only a minor rust spot on the roof rail on one side, no rust in the floors or boot and interior was A1. Only reason I didn't buy it was the owner had over inflated idea of it's worth and didn't accept my offer. She got quite jaded in the end and I think kept the car. She was not a club particpant of any sorts I recall, just used it as day to day transport

Now that is worth a project car status, R15/17 1600 with side draughts or FI/management, HD suspension and good wheels and tyres, R17G brakes, with an upgrade interior (fuego/R17), R18 5 speed. What a car!!!!!

That's lovely!! I do get a bit misty seeing old photos like that and remembering just how well Renault Australia was going when they had such a competitive product. I miss our R12 wagons. And the 16TS. And........

I hope you find a taker - as Ray said, well worth considering.

Didn't they all have Sierra engines? Three different variants perhaps.
