    Default Renault 16 auto

Noticed a Renault 16 auto for sale on Ebay. I'm not interested in buying but I was curious. Was the auto regarded as desirable? Was it a dog? It appears to have had some form of electronic control -would that be a problem now? Did Renault build the transmission?
    Interested to hear your thoughts.

The auto trans was developed by Renault, its trick being that it was electronically controlled. The various parameters of the vehicle such as speed and load being fed into the "computer" which determined the optimum ratio of the three to use.

When the electronics worked, and thinks like the vacuum capsule in good condition and the governor cable correctly adjusted, they were a nice trans and worked nice and smooth. Though against today, you would say the gearing was a tad low. However the electronic computer was prone to failure causing a lot of problems, making automatic versions of the 12/15/16/17/18/20 quite unpopular. There was a cottage industry of boffins who could rebuild the computers, or the cars were just changed to manual gearboxes.

I had a 16 TL auto for a while in the 1990s . If the box was adjusted properly it was a very pleasant experience indeed.
Of course it did not have the long legs that the 16ts 4 speed had but it was a very pleasant town car for me. The car on ebay would be mine if it wasn't so far from the Hunter Region

my sister had a low milage 12 auto years ago .... god it was gutless.... The 16's were all TL's ... so not crossflow if I remember right. We had one as a parts car many years ago. I think the reaosn you only find 12 and 16's in such good condition is they were always "old peoples" cars that were bought new as autos ... and no-one wanted htem (infact there still pretty much unwanted).

1335 views and 5 active bidders isn't too bad for a 'pretty much unwanted' car?

sounds like a perfect candidate to put a proper gearbox into then I really did think all the slugomatics were TL's So even if you did the conversion, you were still stuck with the low powered engine.

If you thought an automatic 12 or 16 was a slug you should try an Austin 1800 automatic.
They made the 12's and 16's look like rocket ships.

Having driven Melc's 16TS auto, I found it quite a pleasant experience, in town and highway. No it isn't as fast as one of the manual 16TSs, but it gets along fairly well and cruises nicely on the open road. I say this but also say if I were to own a 16 again it would have to be a manual.

Melc recently happened to find a new correct Weber carb for the 16TS auto in the original box with the Renault part No. still on it, and this seems to have livened it up. It was just put straight on and the idle mixture screw adjusted 1/8th of a turn just to trim it just a little. The difference was surprising. Melc also has a few other manual 16s.

I have also driven Melcs auto 16 and found it quite smooth. In fact I was quite surprised at just how well it went.
