    Default Starter motors

    Hi all

Rang Caravelle Imports last Friday seeking a new starter motor for my Fuego Turbo. One that fits a R18 motor or Type A5L- I think those for the R16 and 17 are the same. They are different to the normal Fuego starter motor. Ken said they didn't have any and intimated they have gone out of production. Tried Dapco and in Sydney and Auto Paris in Melbourne with no luck. Does anyone know of alternative suppliers or have struck this problem?

These are some alternative part numbers that may be helpful. All are covered by the single Renault part number 77 01 499 202:

    Bosch 0. 001 208 209
    Ducellier 532008A
    Paris-Rhone D8E 139
    1963 Renault R4 Van
    1964 Renault R4
    1967 Volkswagen 1300 Deluxe
    1969 Renault 8 Gordini 1300
    2002 Land Rover Defender Td5 130 - ex-CFA Region 4

Thanks Simon - will see what I can find using those numbers. Maybe overseas but will check with my local spark first to see what he can do.

    Hi,

Supports home industries if you get it rebuilt. It's what I did with the starter and generator for my 4CV.

    Regards

If you get a good "reconditioner". I've an alternator here, rebuilt in QLD, with lovely vice jaw marks on the rotor metal from being clamped in a vice (presumably while they were belting the replacement bearings on so hard one oil seal was distorted).

Even the full monty DIY with frilly bits like glassbeading the nose cast, does help Australian industry.

I was looking for a new one about 4 years ago, even then all i could get were reconditioned ones.
Then i found a listing for a new reduction gear starter from a mob called CAE Enterprises in Castlemaine Victoria.
It was listed as P.O.A.They claimed to have a picture of it, but the picture had Fiat 124 written on it.
The Fiat one was listed at $550 so it would probably cost at least that much.

No but I will when out there next week on way to Queanbeyan. Have bought stuff off them before for my A110 and at a discount so they are good. They do their best in trying to find hard to get bits.

I have a variety of rebuilt ones (totally) if you get stuck. You know the deal, postage + a donation to the site.

    Thanks sonopop

That is an interesting site which I have now bookmarked. At present am awaiting a response from kimiwa110 but will look at again.

My motor is an R18 unit type 841. According to Simon and the workshop manual the Renault part number is 77 01 499 202 and the starter motors that fit are Bosch (0 001 208 209), Ducillier (532 008 A) and Paris Rhone (D8E 139). The site you have suggested actually has one in stock but is a REMY part that would correspond to Renault part nos 7701499469, 7701499476, 7701499484, 9031063 and then says the engine code is A2M 723 which as far as I can tell is the same as the type 841 engine. It appears that it might be the goods but worried that the part nos differ. Not a bad price in US$ 120.79 plus shipping.

Perhaps Simon can enlighten us on whether the Remy part might fit.

Leave it with us and I'll report back, I'd missed the further request. I'll crank up the old Microfische and check the PR 400 catalogue, that may have more equivalencies and include US market numbers.

This one ended up as a bit of a magical mystery tour. None of the quoted part numbers above correspond to any Renault part numbers that I've got (not even in the PR698), but the US spec Renaults also have unique parts catalogues so may have had a unique spec starter for the States not listed in the other catalogues, and they may have been superseded in the meantime.

Using the latest edition PR400 (1976 - 1994, 12/1994 edition) brought up the following numbers:

    R1365 Version 100/102/120/600
    Paris Rhone D8E 139, 7701 348 605, supply until stocks exhausted
    Superseded by:
    Paris Rhone D9E 69, 7700 758 172

    R1365 Version 246
    Paris Rhone D10E 80
    Paris Rhone D10E 76, 7700 680 639, supply until stocks exhausted
    Superseded by:
    Paris Rhone D10E 90 7700 759 721

Cross referencing using the A2M 723 engine type with the PR 400 shows that the 18 fitted with that motor also uses the same starters as the R1365. So it is likely if it fits an A2M motor, it will also suit the Fuego turbo motor.

Note also that the higher the D number (ie D8, D9, D10) the more powerful the motor is. The number of the starter on the AC Delco pic is obscured, but looks to be a D10 number, indicating it is the more powerful starter.

Thanks Simon. Boy what a mystery - I've never heard of Remy before and I guess all one can do is try it and report back. Price is certainly attractive unless it is outweighed by shipping costs.

Delco-Remy used to be a branch of General Motors, similar to AC Delco, I'd imagine someone has purchase the rights to use the name. Note that the starters have been reconditioned, and the one in the picture is stamped Paris-Rhone.
