Default renault scenic 2l 2005 card start system

just another query for our ardent renault enthusiasts ! Both of my daughters cards are misfunctioing, 0ne opens the doors central locking but will not start the car, the other starts the car but won't activate the central locking. It would appear then that the card reader is functioning correctly and the faults lie with the cards. I suppose a new card has to be ordered from france via a renault dealer. Though I haven,t dealt with a dealer as yet I believe the cost of a new card runs into several hundred dollars. A bit of a shock!!! but is this the only way?Any advice greatly appreciated. Noddy4

Try new batteries in the cards. These things have a habit of running down because many people are not aware that there are actually batteries in them that need to be replaced every two or so years. Good luck with that.

I'd also start with the battery that hides inside behind the emergency key that presses into the card.

New cards for our 2005 Scenic, I have found out, come from France (partly coded to the VIN number, or so my local dealer tells me, which might mean some programming is built in so the coding device at the dealer can talk to the new card). They are some $260 plus a recoding fee of some $80. I've just had a third one done, to hide in a safe place. It came in a few days and the coding was done promptly by Regent Renault in Perth. All three cards work perfectly now.

I tried a cheap "new" one from UK on ebay and the local dealer's coding device wouldn't talk to it. He said this was not uncommon. Heaven knows what is actually going on.

I have heard that to program a new card, the dealer has to email France for a code. Which is emailed back. They then have so many hours to program that code in otherwise it expires and they have to start again.

Possibly why cheapy cards don't work.

Might be the case Kevin. The cheapy cards are the genuine item, but the door key isn't cut. The "factory" ones come with the key cut to the VIN number, I was told. Then they recode the new key AND the existing ones, in my case all three keys.

We always run a minimum of two sets of keys, and I prefer three. The Renault dealer had a car coming in by flat bed just that day after the owner lost both keys, and had no car for two weeks trying to find them and waiting for a new one. And the need the car in the workshop to do the job, so no mobile service. Be VERY careful..... We are really enjoying the Scenic by the way.
