    Default Renault - new cooperative venture with Daimler

    FRANKFURT: Daimler and Renault Nissan will invest 1 billion euros ($1.36 billion) to develop small cars and build a factory in Mexico, the companies said on Friday, in a step that deepens cooperation between the Mercedes and Infiniti brands.

    The companies, which will share costs for the joint venture, said they will build a new plant with a production capacity of 300,000 vehicles in Aguascalientes, Mexico, where Nissan already has a factory.

    Hmmmm sadly we no longer will have a manufacturing base when Holden ,Ford and Toyota leave because the blackmail for taxpayer handouts will not continue. But we will be a great place to dump models that do not sell elsewhere.

    Australia also does not have Mexican labour costs or a domestic market of 120 million people, or contiguous access to the US market or a common language and access to the central and south american markets of nearly a billion people.

    It is an example of both horizontal and vertical market diversification. Geographically it gives access to the Americas but with the Daimler linkage, Renault Nissan now have a product range from the low cost Dacias through to the quality Infiniti. It puts them head to head with the VW group.

    Apart from that, I don't see any issues investing in car manufacturing here.....
