    Default Familiar looking engine?

I stumbled over this DAF for sale and being the sort of person that's attracted to unusual cars, I looked a bit closer at it. What do you think the engine's out of? Looks a lot like a DAF labeled Sierra Renault engine to me with a side draft carby of some sort

Yes, it is a Renault Sierra engine in the Daf. They were first used in the 55, with 1108cc, then later 1289cc then 1,397cc with the Daf 66 which morphed into the Volvo 343 when Volvo took over. Various stages of tune were available, with the Marathon spec (named after the successful finishing of the 1968 London-Sydney Rally team cars) motor being an upgrade of the standard spec motor.

One bit of useless info was when I went to see the 1993 London-Sydney rally through the Flinders Ranges. At the fuel stop at Blinman, a large queue had formed at the Super pump, resulting in a significant delay for those who wanted Super fuel. The two little Daf team cars rocked into the control, spied the vacant unleaded fuel pumps, brimmed their tanks then zoomed off on their way. The cars had been tuned to take advantage of low octane fuels to save time en-route. Smart thinking.

Another useless bit of info is that in the 1968 rally, the Daf crew found they had a problem with their transmission in Rome and to their incredible luck stumbled across a Daf parked in the street. They nicked the transmission out of it and continued the race later to find out they had robbed one of the Dutch embassy staff in Rome who wished them luck with the rally.

I'm all for useless info, I tend to retain it better than important info, so we'll carry that on here ..... wasn't a Daf used in one of the Alby Mangels adventures?
    cheers,

Yes, I reckon Alby Mangels would have seen his fair share of Daf....
