sounds like he's thinking about putting them back on

My dyno guy found a 30% power increase from the twin 40 DCOEs (plus bespoke inlet manifolds & a cold air box & a K&N panel filter) over the standard R5 Alpine downdraught & manifold with a Lynx foam filter.

Anyway, regardless of function, I find twin sidedraughts a piece of automotive art.

Another thought, a lot of folk have posted a lot of 4CV stuff that's now scattered around other threads. It'd be nice if some of that stuff were reprinted here to make the thread a bit of a "one stop" repository (note, not 'suppository').

    cheers! Peter

Sounds like a good plan to me Peter!

This is how I wanted my 4CV to look when finished, before I decided the body was beyond my skills and sold it again ...

Watch out for the 2nd series of A place to call home, channel 7, you will find these two green 4cvs in an episode shot in Sydney late last year, supposed to be France. Driving and parked we were in a couple of scenes.

I might have to send Irish relatives to speak to you if you ever did too!!! Such a nice 4CV.

I got a bit moist about the 16TS Special beside it mind you. Identical to our first one in 1981.

Hmm! Can't say I much like the rectangular headlight conversion. Mind you, I do like the VW tail-lights; for my taste, they are a better look than the originals & the wings are a better place for them.

Still, chaque un a son gout (after all, I have known some folk to, sob, not like the BMW-esque kidney grille on the front of my 4CV).

    cheers! Peter

I guess all to his own but my 4CV already has VW lights on the guards and I am removing them and welding up the holes and mounting Morris minor lights where the originals were. MM lights look almost identical to the original 4CV lamps but are glass.

We are right into "each to his own" territory here.

I really prefer the originals but, really, think the later type work quite well as "warning, my brakes are on" lights but the early ones are not noticed by drivers behind. So mine has a centre brake light wired into the original (Australian) motor bike device used as a number plate light. Having sort of argued for originality, I have contradicted myself with large rear flashers, Marchals from the right era. So, living in a glass house, I am throwing no stones....

That number plate lamp is the same as one of Bob Gray's cars. Locally sourced in the early 1950s I guess, from the local BSA dealer perhaps... Like Renault Australia buying 10S gauges over the VDO retail counter!

I wasn't going to bother with pics of my 4CVG in this thread (most have seen them elsewhere) but I have used the VW lights (earlier type) & was motivated to put them on the guards as I had widened the latter & rather liked the complementary visual widening the lights' placement seemed to achieve. (The reflectors are in the original tail-light spots.) I have also bastardised the number plate backing sheet. I like it better without all that excess plate metal.

    As they say, ymmv.

Ah, but I don't; I am indifferent as to the opinion of others. Besides, there's a difference between a privately circulated clip to trusted friends for their amusement (consenting adults & all that) & a public posting. At least there had better be.

    cheers! Peter
(& before anyone gets odd ideas, I was clothed in steel at the time - although there were some bits of rubber involved rather centrally to the event!)

I'm not a real fan of vw tail lights, I agree there larger and safer but 4cv's get mistaken for beetles as they are without owners putting vw parts on them.

    Default Ruby Scintex lights

    Hi,

I agree with David. VW tail lights do not look "right" on a 4CV. Mine has genuine "Ruby Scintex" with glass lenses. You occasionally see them advertised on Ebay.fr.

Wow, very nice too. There was a set going for ages but without the bases. I'd really appreciate a photo of how yours fit onto the car. I should have bid more for the full, new set a year or two ago, but maybe that was you!

As a rule I don't like VW rear lamps on a 4CV. However, to my surprise and maybe others',I actually agree with Peter's (4cvg) approach for his slightly adjusted car. The earlier VW lenses on the mudguards give a great sense of width to the rear compared with the closer-set genuine items. Those behind (usually receding into the distance I'd guess ) can see brake lights and indicators because their size and position will catch the attention of followers (if they do ever catch him up).

He's used the earliest beetle lamps with amber lenses in preference to the very early beetle type, which is the right choice I reckon.
