    Default R25 V6 gearbox decision..

    Hello all
The AR4 auto transmission in my Baccara seems to be cactus after much investigation, fluid changing and filter cleaning etc, so now I am contemplating the value of removing the AR4 and rebuilding it, or replacing it with a full UN1 manual gearbox with clutch and master cylinder etc which i did with my ULP GTX.
Does anyone have a UN1 box they wish to sell?

I know that the PRV can house the UN1 'box, as all manual versions in Europe, both in turbo and non turbo have the UN1.
I understand that the bell housing and driveshafts may need to be replaced/changed but this may be more cost effective that re-building (or getting someone to rebuild) the AR4. Do Colliers or a VW specialist have a standard price for the AR4 rebuild that anyone has experienced?

Any thoughts, previous experience would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Luke

Fix it - pull it out, pull it apart. Use the spare AR4 I have in Melbourne for bits, learn all about autos in the process.

I'd be interested in having a squiz if its home and you're about this weekend?

luke, when last i noticed, Vivid - the moderator for this particular forum - had an R25 with a UN1 for sale. admittedly that was some time ago so i may be thinking ancient history. but check with him.

V6 and 4 pot different bellhousings though. The real challenge will be finding a V6 bell housing.

I prefer R25s as automatics, I think it suits their character better.

Yep Haakon - agreed regarding the automatic in the R25, much smoother and suited to the opulence of an R25, especially the Baccara.
Ok you have swayed me. The auto rebuild it is.
The spare AR4 box would be very handy

We are heading to South Durras for a week and a half this weekend (bush fires allowing) with the kids, but happy for you to come and have a squizz when we get back

I'll no doubt eventually be travelling from Victoria to Canberra with an empty boot - in the meantime the spare transmissions are in Mt Waverley.

I'm in Hobart again the weekend after next, so after that. I know a bit about these things so may be able to help pinpoint the issue.

Will be nice to see the old girl again

Don't forget, that even though both the early 4 cyl and V6 25 use a UN1, the 4 cyl has lower overall gearing. So after all the work of the manual trans conversion, you end up with a quick off the mark, but busy on the open road V6. Best to find either the correct V6 'box or just keep going with the auto trans rebuild.

    Hi Luke,
You back to your old tricks again, mate I have your old UPL GTX and it now has a new drive shaft and engine mount that Peter fitted to it.
It is available if you wish to go that way.
which Baccara is this you have.
I have a Green 90 model one (keep you eyes OFF) as well as my Brown 88 B29B Auto

Hello Mark. Long time no speak.
Oh wow...... I wondered what happened to my old GTX that was in Peter's collection, you now have it - glad it has gone to a good home.
You have a green Baccara? I am very excited about that. Dare I ask where you found it? Have you got pictures? What is the condition like?
I have a gun metal grey 1990 model. Original Aust car, not an NZ import. Has had a respray but needs some TLC again.I can send you pictures if you would like to see her. Interior not too bad. Has some bits and pieces to get back in order - half the fun eh?

The only other Baccara I had heard about was a Maroon one some 10 years ago, but have heard nothing since on its whereabouts. There were apparantely 14 Baccara/Monacos sold in Aus back in 1990/91. I wonder where they are?

Ahh the brown 1988 ex Syd motor show car I believe? I think it was owned by Bernard here in Canberra from memory?Has a sunroof and the electric mirrors with brown leather interior. Nice.

Still contemplating the best angle of attack on teh gearbox. The 4 spd auto would be nice if I could get it running smoothly. I am hoping that it is not too much of a task to pull out the existing AR4 and rebuild it. Haven't doen a gearbox before, so could be an interesting task. Any advice - much appreciated

    Cheers

    Yeah ok,
You Have the brown 88 one noted as it it exactly as you have described.

I have photos so email me at mjc407@gmail.com and we'll exchange pics.

As for the auto it does depend on how bad it has gone, some just blow the moulded piston seals others, crack internal items and damage the casings, you don't really know until you dismantle them unless there is masses of contents in the pan.

I'll try to help you where I can, I've only done R19 boxes and R21, the R21 box is the same model trans.

    Regards Mark

I would say the auto to manual conversion would actually be quite a handful on the R25, when you factor in things like pedal box fitment, clutch hydraulics, drive shafts (I *think* they are different, could be wrong there), gear lever and trim etc. etc. Unless it's impossible to fix, at the end of the day, I vote for leaving it as an auto :-)

Luke - I'm doing a run to Melbourne in mid March to collect a load of stuff, possibly will have room for an R21 transmission.

Use it also to learn - crack that open first and familirise yourself with the innards
