    Well, it's an R16 dash, but I suspect it's a Fuego wheel...

    nz90125,
Sounds like the number in front of a portrait !!!!

No need the condition, as I will rebuild it, with new leather if need be.

See what you can find, and give me a price please.

    Thanks,
    Ray

Ray, there are certainly quite a few abused examples around my garage. I was fortunate enough to buy two brand new ones from Ken Bailey at Carravelle, the only difference to my Fuego steering wheels is that the aluminium boss had two projections to trigger cancellation of a turn indicator, these were easily machined off the boss. One went to my daughters car and the other graces my car. I paid $150 each for them a few years back and I felt then that was a fair price for a brand new leather covered steering wheel.

I was pretty flush with money then!!

I would be happy to supply a lesser example from my dusty shelves and it would be at a reasonable rate depending upon condition wanted. I also have new Renault pads for the centre of the wheel.

I also have a new sports style leather covered steering wheel that may also fit with some modification. If you want I can supply photos in due course.

I might have a polished variety of the Fuego steering wheel, the web polishes up with an excellent finish.

    Hi Ken,
If you wouldn't mind a picture or two, of the units off the dusty shelf. As I have no problem of refurbishing myself. The Fuego boss would be all right as well as it can be modified.

    Thank you,
    Ray

    Default Steering wheels located

I'll get onto that today Ray

    Steering Wheel !!!-fuego-sw-tatty-leather.jpgSteering Wheel !!!-fuegosw-no-leather.jpgSteering Wheel !!!-002-copy.jpgSteering Wheel !!!-fuego-sw-boss.jpgSteering Wheel !!!-006-copy.jpgSteering Wheel !!!-008-copy.jpg

ist image is the Fuego steering wheel with tatty leather part attached, 2nd image is similar with no leather has chunk out of rubber and polished web 3rd image is why it is difficult to find anything in my garage - (after a few years of limitations due to no cartlidge in knee joint and stacking stuff when tired..etc.) (fortunately now fixed) other image shows spare Fuego bosses, so probably at least two more fuego steering wheels in that mess!! somewhere!! not worth much perhaps $15 in that condition plus postage ? negotiable of course.

I will add two more images, both secondhand Steering wheels , one is an Australi sports steering wheel with goodleather and the other a Renault oddment in reasonable condition, can't recall what i paid for them when i was flush with money - probably put them up on ebay unless I got a reasonable offer beforehand

    G'day,

seem to recall that Jo had a thread here in olden times, pre the great calamity/conjunction [oops, too much SF ]whatever causes web sites to self destruct, about restoring a Fug steering wheel.

    cheers,
    Bob

    Ken,
We will go with the 1st one, I will PM you with my email, so you can send me bank details. I will also take one of the new center pads if you have it at hand.

    John,
No the R16 has a refurbished dished Paddy Hopkirk ready to go on it. It was on my wife's white R16 in S Africa, and it has all been polished up and leather treated, as soon as I bought the TX. I also rebuilt a dash at the same time with a Kph speedo in it. So building has started on it. The Fug steering will go on my R19 I brought back from Adelaide, as the unit on there is terrible (French accent).

    Hi Peter,
Thanks for the effort, but a new one is a bit of a waist as I want to work on it, before it goes on the car.

    Hi Ray.
I looked through my notes but couldn't find the spec of the cover.
I did find this picture though, which shows the pattern and where the stitch lines are, matching the grooves in the wheel at 4 and 8 o'clock.
Stitching this bit without adding too much bulk was the hardest bit.

    Hi Jo,
Have been doing steerings for many years, as we were not able to import them into Rhodesia at the time. My Dauphine, my R4 and my wife's R10 all had hand made wheels. The Dauph wheel was covered by a very good African leather worker who did fantastic car upholstery in leather. Once I saw how he did it I replicated it on my other wheels, and made a bit of sideline money repairing damaged and worn wheels. I also learned the 2 needle technique from this gent, which turns out very smart work. Attached is the wheel for my new Dauph project. Done in a classic car style (R5 Turbo). Do not have a pic at present of the refurbished R16 wheel.

    Ray,
I have a Mota Lita steering wheel and boss for my 504. It is 3 spoked like Ken's Astrali wheel.
The leather covering has gone west but the rubber base is Ok.
Now that you've let the world know of your steering wheelmanship I'm wondering if you'd be interested in recovering my wheel?
Can get the wheel to you no trouble. Give me a PM please if you are faintly interested.

I had a couple of 5 Alpine wheels that needed new covers. I took one to a furniture upholsterer, told him what wanted & he cut out two rim gloves (& spoke spat sets) to my instructions from scrap leather. Then I got more waxed thread from a booty, punched some holes with a leather punch & invisible-sewed them. All of it is dead easy once one has a good cut-out blank. One is on my R8 & one on my Djet. Pic is of the Djet one. I'm not really very anal about neatness & was more interested in function & feel so it's not as neat as most might want but it's easy to increase neatness if that presses your buttons.

    Great Ray

Glad it arrived, and glad to get it all sorted for you, nice easy transaction, and judging from your work, no shortage of customers, if you wanted to turn your hand to it, Good leatherwork as an art and very comforting, looking forward to seeing the finished article.

    Ken
