Default Renault: 8 Port Cylinder Head small CRACK !!

    Fellow enthusiastic Froggers

Is there anybody out there that can speak from experience on this issue.

I am cleaning up a cylinder head to go into my engine re-build and have discovered a small crack between the inlet and exhaust valve seats.

The good thing is the crack is in the thickest part of the web so I sought council with a motor engine reconditioning place and they believe that it is fairly common and in this particular place will not effect or go any further.

I'm hoping that somebody out there might have had similar experience and have gone ahead with the head reconditioning and can say from experience that it hasn't effected the performance.

Check out the Attached photo and let me know your thoughts.

Thanks guys Renault: 8 Port Cylinder Head small CRACK !!-renault-8-port-cylinder-head-crack.jpg

I've got zero experience with a cracked Renault head like that, but I just wonder about pressed in valve seats perhaps falling out over time.

    Hi Phil,

I wouldn't be worried about the performance but other things!

I've definitely not seen or heard of such a crack myself so "fairly common" isn't exactly the way I'd describe it.

The engine reco folk presumably know their stuff but I'd want it fixing for the same reason that Simon gave.

Is it an early or late 8-port head? That is, does it come from a 956 R8 or a 10S?

If the Kiwis such as Frans don't reply, or someone else in Oz, I'd be chasing the UK or South African part of the world - there is a UK forum for example.

Very strange. The early R8 exhaust manifolds do crack and the blocks warp but I'd not seen a head crack before.

Hi Phil, I reckon I would visit a reputable head reconditioner, like Southcotts in the city and get some advice. I am tempted to say get it welded up but as you are aware, if not done properly this can cause all sorts of problems but I would certainly get expert advice before assembling the engine.
