Default 1983 Dunlop 2GO Rally with R5 Turbo

Below is a link to the Australian Classic Car web site where there is a link to a video clip which features a lot of the cars from the 1980's including the Ron Marks R5 Turbo. I was an official at the 83 rally and I remember and have photos of Bob Watson's R5 he built running in the same rally. It was at the 1983 2GO rally that Marks rolled the R5 twice. There is an interview with Marks and his very brave navigator and some clips of a sad R5T. The Watson R5 finished without a scratch. There is also a clip of Steve Annabel rolling his RX3.

Bob Watson's Home built R5 Turbo. Its a 1983 photo so sorry about the quality. The official at the car door is Colin Anderson who some might remember as the VW clubs rally director and driver.

Gotta love the old skool Australian rally videos! Even better with the (unfortunate) Renault content. Nice Euro-esque crowd control and electronic Haldas!!

So what happened to YKG 055 - the R5 Turbo that gets flogged to death (- not Bobs car)?
Ive not seen that R5 Turbo before in any Rallying paraphanalia of the era.

It was for sale about 10-12ish years ago in NZ, along with a whole pile of other Renault 5T parts. Someone did tell us a bit more recently that it did make its way back to AUS.

I worked for Ron Marks for a year in 1986/87 making water skis, he's the 1971 world champion in the sport.
When I traded my first car, an R12, in on a Fuego, he came to the conclusion (quite rightly too) that I was a Renault tragic. This is when he showed me pictures of his R5 Turbo and another R5 that was converted to Turbo spec. Up until now I had no idea at the level in which he was competing, I was always under the impression he competed at club level only!
And to add more nostalgia for me, two years prior to working for Ron Marks, I worked for a Nissan dealership, when the likes of the Bluebird that we see in the footage was still a new car!
    Cheers Renomad
