    Default R17 Brake Light.

The brake light on my R17 came on when braking hard. The manual says that it is caused by loss of fluid. The pedal does seem to go down more than usual but it may be imagination. The fluid level has not moved. There is no apparent leakage. No smoke to indicate fluid going into the vacuum unit. Perhaps the front piston in the split master cylinder (separate front and rear braking) is leaking back into the reservoir. Any ideas and is this possible?

    Hi Sunroof

That brake light is brought on by a switch on the side of the master cylinder. The switch detects differential pressure between the front and rear brake circuits such as a leak as you have said.

But seeing as you don't have a leak I would say that the seals in the master cylinder are leaking like you say causing a differential in pressure.

I would fit a new master cylinder or just fit a master cylinder kit. Hope this helps a little.

Yep confirms my thinking. That's great thanks Col. Bit of a pain though hate bleeding them. The workshop floor has currently got a split tractor on it and other cars in bits so it looks like I'll be lying in the gravel.

Gravel soaks up break fluid better than concrete. Good luck.
