Every day when I wake up I reach up in the darkness with my eyes shut and if I cannot feel anything that resembles a wooden lid I know it will be a good day. No lid today.

If Dave doesn't have them, there's Caravelle in Melbourne. I guess Auto Paris/France.

But then go to France on line - Melun Retro Passion for example (and Web Pieces Retro has them in stock - I just checked). http://www.web-pieces-retro.fr/PEEL/...id=18&start=10

Incidentally, if searching on Ebay France (not Ebay Australia with International setting) your search term will be:
'Joints d'embase cuivre' -that is: copper base gaskets. Maybe also include 'chemises' (sleeves) & remember that 'R4' is as good as 'Dauphine'.
And for talking with the seller, Google Translate is good enough.

If you want an English speaker & none of the locals have the bits, then Jacques at Rear Engined Renault Parts in the States is reliable & friendly.

I should have added make sure you have the proper protrusion you might be lucky enough. You can also cool in water. Unlike steel copper softens when cooled.

The whole point, just to be clear, is that the liner seals also provide enough thickness for the liners to protrude slightly above the level of the block by, if I recall, 2 to 5 thou. These clearances need to be roughly even and make sure the head gasket seals properly around the sleeves as well as holding them down tightly enough to seal. This also makes the straightness of the head itself critical. Also check carefully that the block is straight (they almost always are fine).

    For the R4 only.

No, the paper gasket liners and seals won't suit the late model (1969) R4 blocks. According to the good 'ol MR61, the R4 block was changed on 20/12/1968 to use paper liner seals. You can use the old copper seal liners and liner seals with the late model block, but you can't use the later liners and paper seals in the earlier block. The late block can be identified by having the drain plug change location from the timing cover end of the motor, to the side of the block under the manifold.

However it would be similar for the Dauphine, the later paper seal liners won't suit the Dauphine block.

Also note that there are three types of copper liner seals: 0.95mm, 1.0mm & 1.05mm.

Also from the useless info file. If buying pistons and liners, not only check the liners are for a copper gasket block, but also that the gudgeon pins are 14mm, and not the later 16mm interference fit gudgeon pins. Of course, if the Dauphine has a modded motor, it may have alternate custom modifications.

That plate, and if it is the red car in your pic, looks like the ex-Bruce Porter car from SA.

    Excellent. Well done Simon!

I remember that car when Bruce had it. Same colour as my R8.

I have this vague memory of making contact with you in the mid- to late 1990s in that case.

Not I. Haven't managed to be interstate (from Perth) for a FCD for years.

A red 4CV and President of the Register some years ago sounds like George Cook, then living near Captain's Flat or Canberra. But there are a few red ones around at the core of the Register.

Good luck with the rebuild. Straightforward if care is taken.
