    Default R5 Maxi

I was just scanning Gumtree and came across this fellow in South Africa who is building up and offering to sell a R5 Maxi for R95,000.
It comes with an Alfa V6 engine and so must go hard! Check this out.

That's good at $10,900Au plus shipping to Aust. I used the ebay converter and got $10,881.61
    It needs re-badging to Renaltfa.

    R5 Maxi ????
You guys need to look at the pictures again.
I doubt the picture of the body and chassis are incorrect, but it has an independent diff and drive shafts in the back frame, and a gearbox mount off the centre cross member, not a mid-mounted engine. And I don't know what front end he is using, but lacks sufficient support to stop an Alfa V6 in a hurry. As bad as the terrible American Renault hot rod the other day.

Oooo, nasty. I bet mounting the body on a Toyota Crown or Holden one-tonner chassis would be an improvement.......

A real 5 Turbo, or a Giocattolo, or a 4L 3000 may cost a bit more, but they would likely be much nicer to drive, more reliable, and easier to register. Though the 4L 3000 may be a bit awkward to sneak through Regency......

That car is a bloody joke! It would be a death trap with the home made tube chassis, no give in a crash at all. To call it a Maxi is a disgrace to the Renault 5 Turbo Maxi!!!! I own a Renault 5 Turbo 2 and that piece of crap doesn't deserve the attention its getting!!!

So I take it you don't like it then?

Ray are you suggesting its front engine? I thought the rear diff might have been a dummy just put there to make it roll.

    I concur with Andrew.

    What a con.
One photo is of a real red 5 turbo, the others of the fake.
Pity anyone who falls for it.

    Hi Dave,
Yes, I think it is a front engine, with normal gearbox and rear drive. You would not need a diff unit for it to be mobile. In the UK I saw many an ordinary, front engine front drive, Mk1 R5 with full body kit and wheels. You would swear they were the real maxi thing.

When In ZA I helped build 2 "replica" Maxis, one with a 1550cc turbo R5 motor, and the other with a 3.0lt Renault V6. They were built from "obtained" Renault drawings of the parts used for making the real thing, and some ZA adaptions. But were still not the best cars, and had a lot of difficulty getting registered, and both wound up oval racing. I made the body kits.

+1. A total waste of what was likely a decent Renault 5.

If people are going to screw cars up, they may as well do it properly, like these guys....

    Wonderful Simon.

Other links there too - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MO-b...eature=related for example.

That is quite a job. I'm not often smiling at gross stuff but that one I do like.

    Thanks.

A lot of time, effort and money went into taking two nice cars and turning them into one ugly abomination!
Some people just have too much money and time on their hands!
But as you said Simon, at least they did it properly!
    Cheers Renomad
