Default Pug 206 GTi 180 Crapped Thrust Bearing

Hey guys, my pug recently crapped it's thrust bearing, 2nd time, bought the Panther replacement clutch kit to fit from US, $280 vs $670 for kit from pug wholesaler here in Sydney (OEM part which has failed twice now in 70+k).

After pulling out battery + assay, noticed there's a nice little puddle of oil sitting on the gearbox, though the direct source isn't easily found on the engine. Don't want to run the engine as the thrust bearing is at least partially seized and I don't want excessive heat passing to the main drive spline.

I don't believe it's the common head gasket fail, as the gasket on mine was replaced with a quality unit while under warranty.

Any other known fails I should know about?

Wow two thrust bearing in 70000 km? You must give it a flogging!.... What color is the oil you found? I'd be suspecting something else like leaking PS fliud or spilt oil from an oil change.

Evan maybe a camshaft seel. ?

The first thrust bearing and clutch was in the hands of the previous owner, which was actually brought on by the (infamous) head gasket seal failing on the rearside of the block, small amounts of oil getting into the clutch mechanism, etc. I understood this to be about 40k, fixed under warranty.

Oil on the gearbox is dark honey, though oil in the engine is a nice light honey. Oil level hasn't dropped a noticeable amount. Some traces of lighter oil higher up the back passenger side of the block, I'm suspecting a cam seal too or something in the variable workings.

It just so happens I have factory data for this - though it's in Safari webarchive format. Refer to the attachment for bolt sequence. I think Peugeot suggests replacing the flywheel bolts.

    Flywheel:

    1. pre-tightening in the order shown (1 to 8): 2.5 da.Nm
    2. slackening in the order shown: 180
    3. pre-tightening in the order shown: 0.8 da.Nm
    4. tightening in the order shown: 2.5 da.Nm
    5. angular tightening in the order shown: 42 3

My Haynes says the clutch pressure plate bolts are 15Nm for petrol engines, but Peugeot data I have seems to suggest 20Nm.

Does your oil pressure light go out?

    Does the car drive normally?

Probably a small oil spot on the clutch. I'd expect it will fade rapidly.

So what about the pedal not returning correctly, the metal on metal screeching ?

You didn't describe those details above!

Check the cable path at the pedal end, then the gearbox end. Could be that it's partly unhooked (not sure of the 206 cable end, but almost possible on some other PSA kit).

The 180 uses a hydraulic clutch in rhd configuration. WRC, noise is present all the time but gets worse on depressing the clutch pedal? Sounds like a failed throw out bearing and or also a failed pressure plate. Shudder is defs a pressure plate problem, time for a new clutch WRC. Not the hardest job but not fun either on a 180.

Yes, using fluid from the brake reservoir...

I'd temporarily forgotten that! Yes, thrust race has pushed through the pressure plate fingers.

Usually what I've found it will be is the bearing cage has failed and ejected some or all of the ball bearings from the throwout bearing. What you are left with is metal on metal contact. This damages the pressure plate and the input shaft guide. It can go as far as destroying the CAS, balls get stuck in the starter ring gear teeth and come around and smash the sensor open and the vehicle cuts out. Either way you are on borrowed time.

I did mention a samurai fight taking place! Haha. Ok so new clutch kit and possibly a skim on flywheel if not a newy. I want to upgrade clutch to something 20-45% more bite to match power upgrades on car. Has anyone here played with clutch options for the RC ? Cheers M
