    Default 505 battery light weirdness

S2 505 GTi: Battery light on with ignition (and everything else)off,it goes off when ignition switch on or acc before engine started, also light is off with apparently normal charging with engine running. Suspect alternator or voltage reg is the root cause...any ideas??

    Yes.
Start engine. Turn h/lights on with hi beam.
Connect multi-meter across battery terminals. Should read about
13.5volts if alternator charging OK - & not fluctuate.
It is possible that the field transistor that controls the field windings earth circuit is on the blink.

check the brushes in the alternator probably well worn. Have had three fail on me with intermittent charge .
eventually it ceases charging & you will stop by the side of road when battery voltage drops below 11.5 V
