Peugeot 406 vs Renault & others

Hi all, I am normally on the Renault forum scrounging bits and info for my 17 Gordini. However, the Commodore just about needs replacing as my day to day car. At the moment the 406 is on top of my list. Haven't decided on auto or manual. Haven't decided on engine although the HDI would suit all the kms I do. I am interested in anybody's feedback on the HDI and the transmission? Do these cars have any inherent faults?
I also like the Laguna but they look a bit bland inside and the dealer I went to this afternoon couldn't be bothered serving me.
One big question I have is how slow is the HDI off the line. Last time I was in a Diesel it was a Gemini and I dont think it's fair to judge diesels by that horrendous experience. I also looked at the Mazda 6. It was ok but overpriced for the one I wanted.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I haven't driven a Peugeot HDi but I have driven a Renault DCi (same Common Rail Diesel technology). The Renault Scenic 1.9DCi was from memory 11 seconds 0-100km/hr. It was no slouch anyway!

The reviewer says he was driving it full throttle from the lights, and up to 160, 170km/hr and still did under 7L/100km.

I think the 406 HDi would be a brilliant car

C5 doesn't tickle your fancy? There are some nice deals going.

The 406 will be replaced within the next year. If you look at 0-100km/h, you'll be disappointed -but that's never the best stat on which a diesel can generally be evaluated. One thing's for sure, you'll find very few cars of the 406's size that can match its fuel economy.

How does the C5's fuel economy compare to the 406's? It'd have an advantage in the area of aerodynamics, I'd imagine, but probably a small weight penalty. The interior is nicer IMHO, but the exterior is a personal choice

Thanks for the advice guys. Must admit to not being a Citroen fan. Will definately shop around for other models. Had a look at the 406 yesterday and it was very comfortable and conservative (as expected). Does anyone have an idea when the 406 is being replaced. I can wait if its going to be in the next 6 months. I've still got the Gordini for the occassional speed burst and thrills so screaming off the lights is not mandatory in whatever I buy for day to day use.
