Default Whats a very nice 205GTi 1.5 series worth?

I know of a very nice white 1990 series 1.5 205 GTi sitting little used in the Canberra area. It has about 160,000km on it and has been babied by its current owner of about seven years. I drove it recently and it goes very well, but needs valve seals and an a/c regas, otherwise hard to fault on its new rubber. It has a very tight rear beam. Whats it worth in the current market?

Just get it, but don't count on turning a profit on resale. It's worth whatever you can afford to pay since you're the only buyer.

Ask an insurance company how much you can have it insured for too, you don't want it to be written off in a random accident and leave you with no car and no money.

He said a very nice one so I would assume it is better than the series 1 he sold me which is much better than average.

If the body is perfect with no bumps rust or dings, the seats are still firm and the dash is not falling apart, it has most of its service history, its probably worth over 6k IMHO. They are still great cars and will keep up with an S3 9 times out of ten.

But as said, its worth what you want to pay for it. If its that good it will always be worth what you paid for it...

When, eventually, any GTI only comes up for sale once every 6mths and demand (from nostalgic weirdos like me) strongly exceeds supply then how much will they be worth? and how far off is that situation?

There's quite a few GTIs on sale at any given time, and on paper some are worth looking at. In reality, very few seem to be worth their price, or people are doing it tough, because I can see quite a few of them are still there unsold.

For a "really nice" one I think nothing is off the cards. Depends what "really nice" means for the buyer.

Personally I would consider "really nice" something original, with no dings, good paint (absolutely no rust), and very good interior (no collapsed foam, intact upholstery, etc.) everything working fine.

Engine and g'box (and mechanicals in general) are not a worry as bodywork and interior are a lot more troublesome (read difficult to find parts) to put right.

What does this mean? Bearings seized so tight you can't remove the shafts? Unless it's been serviced in recent years the rear beam will need shafts and bearings. Guaranteed.

Yep, pulled a 306 and 205 beam apart this week, what a mess!!
One 205 Si shaft was OK and the bronze bushes seem to have worked OK on the totally destroyed 306 shafts.
Not a lot of purchase area (because of the wear) for the loctite so hope the bushes don't start moving on the shafts.

I think he means the beam is in very good shape, with no problems.

How would he know unless he pulled it apart? Or had receipts for work done? Ditto for 306 and 206 owners I'm afraid.

Because you just jack them up either side, one at a time and check for play and movement

If someone said they had a tight engine, would you think they needed to pull it apart to know? It is a figurative expression of the english language, something tight is in good shape.

If the rear beam felt "tight" it could mean that the beam has seized i.e it dont move up and down.

Correct. Ive had two that, "After jacking up" felt fine, pulled them apart, well on the way out! Its the first thing I do every time I want to renew something on a 205 worth keeping. Probably the best money spent bringing the car back to its glorious best. Unless there are receipts then its touch and go.
