Default " The secret of the 205GTI is.....".

" The secret of the 205 GTI is that it has no secrets ".

An extract from an article by English Autocar motoring writer Andrew Frankel in the 22 Feb issue on news stands this week.

" It's all about harmony. the way the various components of the car interact with each other, a whole that interacts with you - that's what makes you feel so much part of the process.During my day in this car [ he used to own one ] , I was shocked by the feel of the steering, amazed by the smoothness and gutsy power delivery of the engine and frogmarched down Memory Lane by a chassis so willing to tip into gorgeous off-throttle neutrality that it bordered on the compulsive ".

Writing this , he is driving a pristine 125,000mile 1985 example.

What was he sniffing ? Was there a fuel leak somewhere ?

In the same issue they reveal the new 208GTI Concept to the startled English motoring public.

Fellow writer Steve Sutcliffe also offers peugeot some design advice about the production 208GTI.

    Incredulously yours, Richard

no one is paying these motoring writers to keep crapping on about 205 GTI's as a benchmark for motoring joy, so there must be something in it all?

Dino, the answer is obvious, more noise in corners - or get into a 405.

Have never driven a 205 Gti but reckon 800kgs with 122Hp motor is a big part of it, but hardly a secret.
