The side windows make it unique in Australia. I hope somebody takes it on.

The 403 van wasn't imported - I don't know why. The Edwards van was generally regarded as the only one known in Australia. It has no side windows and is the back door blanked in? There are no accurate registration figures because at one stage wagons were being sold as panel vans, to attract lower tax, and the seats were bought separately. They were in practice the same as the wagon. So there are lots of 403 "variants" in the registration lists. There were several 403 hearses which would have had one side window. The side windows in 203 vans are very common and seem to be of the one pattern so may have been factory fitted. I've never seen a 403 van like this before.Commonwealth import figures record the import of a panel van and a 403C into the ACT in the early 1960's. The 403C has never surfaced and may have been a diplomatic car which was re-exported.

Does the reference to "The Edwards" refer to Cam and Lew of Quenbeyan?

Yes, I presume that is the blue van. I've never seen it in the flesh.

    Default Bertha 403 Commerciale

Our 403 Van (per the images on our profile) was imported and used specifically by the French Embassy in Canberra. Their is a fantastic story of her life in the Edwards Family, just have not had time to write it, but I will one day.

Bertha as we call her, is now bestowed to myself John, and my brother Bob (The Mechanic of the family). We like to keep her running, and fully registered, but she only gets out of the garage now and then...shame, we really love her, but family and work keep us very busy.

As Flash always says...keep on pugging!

    Thanks!
I was going to start on the 404 sedan soon...but something like this HAD to be put to the top of the heap!
It's even going ahead of the turbo conversion and respray on my Volvo 242GT...which is a BIG call seeing how much fun those are with a turbo and some decent suspension...
Picking it up in the next couple of weekends when I arrange a trailer, it will be under a tarp for a couple of weeks while I clear and organize the shed it will be restored in, then I will start stripping it...

Anyone know where I should go for engine rebuild stuff?
It's got a siezed engine and I have a spare but that is of unknown condition from a wreck, and if it turns out the engine is original I want to keep it in there.
Also going to need carby, air cleaner, dizzy and headlights as they are missing so if anybody has those give me a yell...
SO keen to get my hands on it!!!!

Well I got the van home last night, 700km round trip but it's home safe and sound.
Initial inspection reveals some bits are better than I thought.
Floor is a bit rusty but mostly there.
Less rust than I was expecting but the sills are totally shot.
Had ally plate riveted over them and bogged up smooth but luckily the bog was put straight over the original paint so as it has cracked away the paint has preserved the metal underneath, as has the roller applied house enamel.
Few bits I'll need to find, carb, dizzy, headlights, generator is missing so I might fit an alternator instead (if I do that I will fit halogen globes also) and the grille in the middle of the dash is missing.
All door locks are siezed and in a bad way.
back wheels have been widened so I'll be looking for a pair of 5 stud 403 wheels.
Windscreen is cracked top to bottom so I'll be chasing one of those new laminated ones from QLD.
Still unsure of the windows....not certain they are original and I'm of a mind to weld them up to make it into a proper panel van again.
Thinking maybe of a 123 ignition but that and an alternator are almost certainly the only modifications that it will get.
Now to sort out my shed so I can get it in there and start stripping it down for welding!

Going to start a project thread soon for it.

Thanks very muchly to those who have already messaged and emailed me with help, advice, and offers of parts!
I will be needing plenty more of that before she sings again but the community here is filling me with joy!

I am over the moon with my new toy although my 404 will be jealous as it has been shuffled down the pecking order for attention somewhat!
