    Icon5 306 GTi6 - Timing belt/tensioners/water pump cost?

    G'day all

I'm looking at a gti6 and the timing belt/tensrioners/waterpump is 43,000/3 years old. So in my mind it would be a good idea to renew these items immediately if I was to purchase.

I have a fairly good idea on how to change it all over, however time is an issue.

I'm on the north side of Melbourne.

What is everyone's thinking on the cost and a good place to go. From memory it cost me around $500 in parts to do my S16.

The thinking behind this it to deduct it from the sale price.

43,000KM??? At the very least I would think that it should be fine until the cam belt needs changing so that would be 80,000 KM. The only reason I would say to do them after 43,000KM is if their is notable cam belt wine (indicating an incorrectly tensioned cam belt).

My S16 seized a tensioner at around 150,000KM I think, but I'm pretty sure that was because of an incorrectly tensioned cam belt. It had had whine from day one of fitment at 127,000KM when I blew the head gasket. The belt was replaced as a matter of course and pretty sure the water pump as well as the thermostat pin had come out and mangled it. They only lasted about 20,000KM. The tensioners were not replaced at the 127,000 mark, but I suspect they would have failed even if they had have been.

Based on the 4 pugs I've bought allow $1200 for the lot....and I also replace these items after purchase regardless of previous history as it is cheap insurance = peace of mind : )

Common wisdom says 80,000kms or 10 years.... I hate to say it, but it sounds like it should be a selling point for this car, not a bargaining point.

It's the same cost as S16, as it's the same parts.

    ie
    cambelt
    tensioner(s)
    water pump
    coolant
    + 4hrs labour
