convert 505 GTi 3A to 5Manual

I've given up looking for a 505 GTi (or STi) 5spd manual sedan, so a friend suggested buying an auto sedan and getting it converted to a manual. He is thinking of doing this to a Falcon, so parts and labour is easy to find. How much harder would it be for a 505? I don't have enough experience to do it myself, so would have to get a friendly Pug mechanic to do it for me.

So, how easy would it be to get all the parts (gear box and clutch, what else is needed?) and then get someone to do it? Would the labour cost much, or should I forget about this idea?

thank you!

The BA7 5 speed gearboxes with the right bell housing and input shaft to suit the 2.2 litre engine aren't always easy to find. I think they're $1500+ from wreckers.

Forget it mate...
To get pug mechanic to do it yourself would cost a small fortune, and thats only if you manage to find a transmission in the first place.
...Thats not to say it is'nt a nice idea though

Problem apparently is that people don't change the gearbox oil... primary gears wear out. Find a stuffed box and I'll let you know where to get it fixed.

thanks for the info.

I'll just have to keep an eye out for a 5spd manual 505 Sti or Gti.

Actually I'll even consider a 505 SR carby with a manual.

Can anyone think of other places to look for one other than the Trading Post and www.drive.com.au ?

Ask Hayden or his wife at PugWreck (03) 9720 7521 whether they knows of any for sale, nJm. They could also give you some info about the availability and price of conversion parts etc.

There were a couple of STi manuals floating around just before Christmas so don't give up hope. They do pop up reasonably regularly in Melbourne. The 505's have been thin on the ground generally since then, (holidays I guess) so I'd expect a reappearance soon.

When you are looking in the papers etc cast your eye further than Melbourne. Bendigo and Ballarat throw up some good cars.

Cheers
