    Default 505 XD2S Autopsy

After it's untimely demise a fortnight ago, I finally pulled the engine out of the 505 GTDTurbo wagon today.

The car overheated (badly) climbing 'Tap Hill', a large, 14km stretch of uphill when you're heading north halfway between Gilgandra and Coonabarabran. There were 3 people on board, an 800kg hire trailer carrying a 403, which itself was full of spare parts. It was about 30degC outside.

As expected, the head gasket has blown between 1 & 2.

But the real surprise was the cause, or possibly causes.

The first cause was that the fuse for the cooling fan was blown - which could only have been co-incidence. But I still couldn't work out why that would have caused such a problem, considering that we were still moving at 80kms/h when the temperature gauge started to soar.

The answer came today once it was all apart. There is a hole, obviously a manufacturing defect, between the inlet and outlet of the water pump. About the size of a 10 cent piece, it meant that the water pump wasn't circulating water through the radiator, only around in circles within the water pump.

It looks like it's been like that for a while, I'm surprised I hadn't seen any symptoms earlier!

Tomorrrow I pick up the replacement engine for it. Hopefully it is as strong and reliable as this last motor was (up until last weekend)!

At least the XD2S is easy enough to work on.
