    My latest purchase...what a bargain!

    All,

Picked up a 1986 Series 2 manual 505 GTI last week for WELL under $2,000..... approve

Car has just had a cam belt, water pump, head done, new clutch, break and clutch master cyl's, plus many other little bits!

I cant understand it....people in Hobart must be stupid mallet ! Last owner had this car on the market for months and months !

All it needs is a set of new tyres and one side needs some TLC on the paint....but hey how often do good manual GTI's come up at this price ! Never so far as I can remember

    Cheers

    Congrats!

I won't say anything else as I fear the extreme jealousy I'm experiencing might make me say something nasty mallet .

You got a great deal, that looks like a very nice car...

... but the sad truth is that I think the bottom has fallen out of the market for 505s in the last 18 months or so, they're now in a similar price backet to 504s, which almost means they're worth the work that's been done recently, and not much more. I've seen 505 Executive/GTis in allegedly good nick languish in the trading post for as low as $3500, and I've seen other Executive/GTIs for as little as $1500... the difference in condition doesn't seem to warrant the extra $$.

It's all good if you're a 505 buyer (me!), bad if you're a 505 owner (also me!) mallet

Well done! It looks great! dance
I've never seen a silver series II before, very nice, and the interior looks like its in good nick.

Gus, it's interesting to hear about how little 505s are going for now. When I was searching for a 505 mid last year, I was having a lot of trouble finding them and the ones I did find were all $5000+.

Owners didn't seem to want to part with them, which was demonstrated to me when I test drove a series I GTi being privately sold, and the next day the lady owner called me to say she liked the car too much and didn't want to sell it anymore!

Maybe the slump is just part of a cycle?

There is no way I'm selling my car for a long time now. I've invested too much in it

The sad truth is that if I add the purchase price to all the repairs and servicing costs, I have an $8,300 505 GR cry

Yeah it's not bad at all, we have a gold one...same car as that at home as well....

I really dont know that the market has really fallen out of 505's that much...quite often GTI's and even late STI's are still going for 4-5,000....

The early stuff is getting cheap...but also very very ratty...I picked up an auto '80 model for $150 the other week...very average motor car....

But as I say the late stuff still seems to be holding up..trouble is a lot of the cars are just being let go now..

I saw a good Series 1 STI Manual Exec sell for $5,000 but then I heard of a good Manual STI *1984* one owner sold for $1500 a few weeks back!

It's hard to pick them, but as I must say I have never ever seen a Series 2 this cheap, not in this cond !

    Cheers

No, you're right, not a series II. Maybe I was being a bit defeatist.

But I've been watching the Trading Post these last few weeks, and most of the later 505s with larger price tags on them seem to be riding out their duration without selling.

... that's not to say they're not worth it.

I remember when the wagons held a premium of a few thousand over the sedans, but now you can get a SR Estate for as low as $3k.

Plenty of really cheap worn out early model GRs around (sub $1k). Actually, on average in the Victorian trading post, the 504s are selling for more than the 505s .
