    Default 306 GTI6 on a Summer's day..... :(

Went for a drive this afternoon, nothing long distance or much traffic or load on the engine, mostly freewqay driving, air conditioner running on the way there.

Nothing I haven't done before a 110 times...... so Houston, we have a problem !

Temperature sensor on centre dash reading 40-42 degrees C,it is a hot day, water temperature nearly on red, oil temperature half way between 90 and 140.

What the hell is going on?

Didn't lose a drop of water and it sounded like fans were running although maybe not in high speed that I could hear.....

I had a new water pump and thermostat fitted not long ago.

Anyone want to share experiences or wisdom ?

Usually, water & oil temp sit within about 5 degrees of each other.

When the cooling system jobs were done, was the cooling system bled-properly? That is all 3 bleeders were opened, (radiator, thermostat housing, & firewall), heater on full setting and a header tank fitted so any trapped air could purge itself through those bleeders then run through 2 fan cycles & the level re-checked?

Has it been taking longer than normal to get up to temperature when it isn't a hot day? I've had problems with thermostats (the first one the pin came out of and lodged itself in the water pump. The last one I had to replace, I drove from Sydney to Gosford (on a cool day) and it didn't get up to temperature (only made it to about 80deg. But on a hot day it would run at 100 deg and when idling in traffic get up to closer to 110.

As soon as I replaced it, everything back to normal again (up to normal 90deg within a couple of KM and only ever goes a couple of degrees higher than that before coming back down again.

Perhaps yours (despite the fact it has just been replaced) is a faulty one. My theory is that when they start to fail they open early but don't fully open. I've no idea why though!! I've replaced three with the exact same symptoms in the last 12 years. I kept the last one I replaced to do some experiments on, but don't have a thermometer that can handle boiling so haven't done any.

    Thanks for the input guys,

I didn't mention having relays melt their connectors being fixed, replaced as well as a thermo fan, and 2 water pumps in 8 years......

Will check the thermostat, car has had minimal use in the last 6 months.
Maybe they have a tendency to fault due to repeat "warm moments" around the city ?
Should definitely give the cooling system a complete overhaul after the last incident.

Bleeding is done right by Corrado at Eurocare.

Might re-visit the relay issue and see if there is a repeat occurence of a fan speed problem like before.

Just a small thought, has it got enough water? Mine hasn't got a catch tank, so it tends to lose water over time, and me being slack about it eventually led to minor overheating in traffic.

May be too simple for your problems, but is an easy thing to fix

    Cheers,

    Hi Daniel

The water was what I was expecting to be lacking, but to my surprise all there !

Think its time for a service and tinker in a few places...
