    Icon5 306 GTI6 exhaust leak

    G'day all.

My project 306 GTI6 which has been sitting in the garage for months has an exhaust leak.

I've jumped under the car whilst running to have a look, however, seems difficult to work out exactly where it is coming from.

The cat is fairly new from what I can tell.

I'm thinking it may be the ring gasket that fits between the front cat/pipe and the manifold...the flexible join?

The exhaust smell seems a lot stronger if that makes any sense.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers Dom

    Default 306 exhaust leak

    Hi Dom,
Leak sounds like the one in my (ex) XSi. You can't see it untill it gets really bad.
What happened in my case was a hole blown out on the front muffler exhaust pipe section, roughly under the g/shift assembly but on the very top of the pipe, shooting fumes straight in thru. the shifter boot into the cabin.
Very strange really, you would expect to find a hole on lower section where moisture could lie. You can't see this from underneath but i was on a long run at the time and the leak progressed rapidly leaving a visual coating on heat shield and nearly gassing us !

To find source put car up on stands or a hoist with engine running and get someone with a rag to block exhaust pipe while you are underneath. Look for smoke and noise source good luck.

Suck up some brake fluid with a small tube into the inlet manifold. It smokes like crazy and pin points leaks instantly. 50mL is enough.
