    Default Rubber thingy fell off!

The other day I reversed my 404 ute into its parking spot and noticed an foreign looking object on the ground. I picked it up and it was obviously an item of an automotive nature. I remember seeing two of them hanging somewhere between the motor and gearbox the last time I took a look there and I always wondered what they were. It is solid rubber and and square and longish the size of of a house hold light globe box. Anyway, I had a look underneath and, yes, one is missing! The one I found broke right off! What is their purpose? I took it for a careful drive and I half expected all sorts of dramas, but she is fine!

Are you taking about the rubber blocks mounted off a plate near the junction of gearbox and torque tube?
There are a pair of them with metal weights at one end.

They are harmonic dampeners, think a tuning fork arrangement, to minimise vibration from the drive shaft.

There are lots of 404s without them and it never seems to do much damage.

Yeah, I agree... They should be some kind of harmonic balancer, but... I've found no differences with and withouth them...

There was a young man from Lorne,
Who wished he had never been born.

He wouldn’t have been, if his old man had seen,
The end of his rubber had torn.
