    Default Temp gauge stopped working

Today i was driving around in this summer heat, car seems to be running fine. Then later on the afternoon the temperature gauge dropped to cold when obviously the car has already been running all day. I made it home, no dramas. is there a risk of my car overheating?

If your guage is no longer indicating the temperature, the risk is that it might without your knowledge. I'd check electrical connections first and then if necessary post details of your car so that members with specific knowledge can contribute to your problem.

Yes, it definately could be an electrical problem. But it could be a couple of other things too:

    1. Coolant leak somewhere. If the coolant level is too low to immerse the sensor, the result can often be a low temperature reading. All too many times I have seen the results of people driving a car that was 'getting hotter and hotter' and then suddenly went cold - so they thought all was well again. Engine was actually cooked.

    2. Thermostat may have jammed open, meaning that the car actually is running cold. Not a good thing, because it doesn't have to jam far open to run cold during normal use - but then it won't open any wider when you're on a big hill or on a hot day, and then it will overheat.

Just some things to look out for.
