    205 GTi rattle.

    Hi Everyone,

I just recently purchased a 2nd hand 1987 Pug 205 GTi. It is by far the greatest car I have ever owned and is such a joy to drive. Though I have a problem with it, a few weeks after I bought it I noticed that there was a little shaking noise when I would accelerate quickly. The noise was evident at 3500 rpm and peaked at 4000 rpm, after that it seems to disappear. Now the noise is a fair bit louder and I am starting to become rather worried. It seems that the noise is louder on the right hand side of the car. It is a metal on metal rattle caused by some vibration. I have a sneaking suspicion it could have something to do with the exhaust/manifold. If anyone could help me ID the problem I would be most grateful.

    Cheers

In my 309 (Ok it's no 205, but still XU engine), at 3000rpm dead on, this rattle/buzzing occurs, sounds like the exhaust to me, but *shrug*, I am just used to, and expect heaps of weird squeaks, rattyles, buzzing noises in my pug )

Coincidently,I get this noise from my 306 between 3000-3500 RPM only when the engine is cold.
I think this issue has been raised before and most owners suspected it was an exhaust problem but could not pinpoint exactly where.

405 drivers will agree to this on their models also. Both past SRi and Mi16 have had this problem.

Sounds like the same for all Pug original exhuasts. As revs rise, usually 2100-3200rpm on Mi16, the baffles mounted inside the mid-muffler rattle due to the pressure/vibrations of the air rushing through them. It annoys the hell out of me on the Mi16 but it is not affecting the cars performance nor causing damage in any way (That I know of!). Plus the cost of another muffler is something that can be avoided.

If anyone knows how to fix, please let us know! Would binding/strapping the muffler externally to apply pressure fix it?

Like we say, it is one of the 'character' traits of the Pugs. Enjoy the 205GTi - I loved my "ELMO"

Stu G, how certain are you that it's the mid-muffler and not the catalitic converter?
I'll hate to have replace one of them.

    First of all,

    Welcome to the club
205s are great, you're going to have alot of fun!

    As for the rattle?,
    Work on the KISS principle....
I've had a few issues with the end muffler in my 205 rattling (at certain rpm and thrown around certain corners etc) around and have had to have it remounted etc several times....check that first

keep in mind that 205s do rattle and vibrate a fair bit for a "modern" car, i wouldn't get too hung up on them....all 205s are like that, just part of their charm i guess

I had an extremely annoying resonance occuring in 1st and 2nd gears at WOT around the 3000-4000 rev range, then again at 6000-6500rpm.

I thought it was the exhaust rattling on the floorpan, other people thought it was a muffler, one performance workshop even suggested it was a gasket that needed replacing on the cat!

Talk about keep it simple stupid... the Peugeot mechanics discovered it was the headers rubbing on a misaligned heatshield. They fixed it for free!

Check that the air filter has not worked loose. These quite often break the mount that is on top of the exhaust manifold and rattle. Also check the heat shield on the firewall near the exhaust mainfold is not loose or touching anything.

    Hello Everyone,

I am a new(ish) owner of a 205GTi. I have found that it is a little noisy and there are a few sqeaks and rattles, but it is alot of FUN.

I haven't had any major dramas. I think I need to adjust the clutch as it is biting very close to the floor, and it is sometimes a little difficult to get it into 1st or reverse.

    Dear Cuko,

My 1990 205 GTI had a similar metal on metal rattle appear after having a new exhaust and some air-con work done. Although I chased the exhaust issue for months - even being told I would have to replace the system - it turned out to be the aircon plumbing. Just an alternative perspective.
