Default Squealing ventilation fan - any ideas?

    Hi all,
The fan on the SRDT is intermittently squealing quite loudly. Bashing the glove box with the palm of my hand stops it for a while
Could be an issue with the fan motor, or something stuck in the vent?
    Cheers,

    They all do that Sir.

I've found that keeping the fan speed set to the horizontal lines just above the minimum and keeping the recirc on fresh keeps the whining from happening. If that doesn't work than a new motor will definitely fix it.

Remove it from under the insulation, (if there is any left). I think there are about seven or nine clips holding it in. You need fairly small hands but it is possible.
Soak the motor and bushes several times over the next day with some kind of silicone product, (RP-7 or similar), shake off excess and reinstall.
The air will stink of the RP-7 for a few days/weeks but the squealing will stop. In the interim you can disconnect the fan motor at the last connector, but it is meant to be on all the time.
Prior to the great crash I wrote a long, "how to fix it", for the SII.

Thanks Gamma and Uffee - not surprised to find this is a common problem.

That other thread is great gamma, thanks for taking the time to find it - I should have found it myself...

Be sure to get into the cavity and suck out all the [email protected] that clogs up the heat exchanger, (I used a flexable rubber hose of about 2" with an air bypass on a vacuum cleaner).
The "Fix" will last about a year and gets easier every time you do it.

    Default 505 fan squealing

    Cheers,

Mine does the same every now and again, also has become intermittent. In both cases the first thing to do is give the sound proof casing around the fan a tap/knock with the handle of a hammer. In my case the sound proofing is long gone so it a straight tap to the fan. This sometimes reults in the squealing worsening, so another tap is required.

And from an AF post, I forget who, drill a small hole in the back of the fan case and spray in you favourite lubricant, seal small hole with tape. A good quick remedy.

Often 505 owners believe that when the fan stops working or becomes intermittewnt that the fan slide control on the centre console is the culprit. I have foolishly replaced slide controls in the past but reckon now that it is the contacts in the fan causing the problem.
Having taken out one fan from a wreck I don't look forward to having to do it again and can't imagine getting one back in a car. It is possible but must be a real PITA. The above solutions can put this off for a long time.
