    Default Series 3 205GTI

I'm driving round in a Series 3 205GTI at the moment. I don't care what anyone says, the Series 3 205GTI is simply the best of all of them.

The smooth torque is just awesome

    I want a Series 3

My favourite too, but soooo much better with a 3.94:1 cwp and Quaife. Now that is the perfect car. Who has that Miami Blue that Adrian & I rebuilt? That has the listed goodies.

What's the difference between the S3 and the S1/S2 apart from engine management?

Main differences between the DFZ and DKZ engines are :-
different valve sizes, compression chambers, camshafts, piston dishes, sumps.
There are probably other things but these spring to mind initially.

I understand we didn't get the DKZ engine in Australia, so that's all nice but irrelevant to us.

As an owner of both S1 and S3 cars I feel fairly confident that the information I have supplied in the previous post is correct. However I' m also happy to be corrected as I' m not the expert in all things GTI.

The engine we didn't get here was the 130 HP leaded D6B as far as I know.

    Do a search.

    S1/S2 DFZ 75kW (105hp)
    S3 DKZ 90kW (122hp)
    UK Spec leaded D6B 130hp

Also, there's heaps of DKZ's in BX and 405.

Yep, basically the whole engine other than block, crank, rods and oil pump.

As owner of both S1 and S3 cars it should be easy to check the engine type plate on your car.

I didn't need to as I already knew the answer.

But one of the great things about this forum is that you're always learning new stuff from people with a wealth of knowledge and experience hence the proviso

Chris thats why im keen to get my S3 going with the dkz 8v and the 4.06 final drive quaife box. Dare i ask but what do others think? would it be a shame to put a gti6 into what could be an already good fast car? im starting to think theres always plenty of S1 or S2 cars laying about with knackered motors i could put the gti6 into one of them? what you reckon

Do it. Whilst ever the Motronic is working properly with the AFM they're a great car. Depends how much highway work you do. The 4.06 is only 3% lower than 3.94, but it all adds up. I've got a 4.06 ready for a 16V conversion.

GTi S3s are like Datsun 1600s, everyone wants a nice original one but when they get one they modify it, result one less car and the value of the remaining ones increases.

No such thing as an S3 in the UK, just a 1.9. No power steering is a minus, the later ones probably have PAS but also the DKZ instead of the proper 130 hp engine.
The DKZ in my 94 model doesn't seem all that torquey but goes hard between 6 and 7, just like a 16 valve. My 130 hp cars certainly had/have more torque.

Buy an S1/2 and mod it. Im doing this to two cars. Both bodys are a bit ragged but mechanical are great. If I happen to bin it or someone else hits me, Im not going to be that devastated. Can just re body it

    I miss my s3 already!!

In the uk we had ph1, ph1.5 and ph2

The later ones had the cat (1991 onwards) and then had 122bhp

Se editions came out with power steering, full leather etc (ph1.5) but it was optional on all later ones when new, so was abs...

Dont mod a s3 that is why I sold mine, because I wanted to mod it!!

And couldnt bring myself to do it!

    That tears it.

    I'm buying a S3/ph2.
