isn't there a small metal identification plate? Besides the VIN, it should also contain the paint number. With peugeots from that era it should be a four letter/number combination.

Well they certainly don't make it easy.

It's painted in faded white paint on the passenger (or left) side strut tower, next to the power steering fluid reservoir as in this attachment.

In the attachment, the code is P3JZ, which is Regency Red.

PeugeotLogic, of course, have the relevant paint codes for most Pugs.

what I can find on the dutch 405 forum:

    normal paint (without varnish):

    Cabernet POJR
    Carlet P3KG
    Cherry/Lemans P3KB
    Regency P3JZ
    Vallelunga P0KB

    metallic:

    Pagoda M0JP

    Pearl:

    Alhambra M4JF
    Alhambra M1JF
    Alhambra M0JF
    Alhambra EJF
    Diablo M4KQ
    Morello M0KW
    Vulcan M0KZ

So finding any of this codes somewhere on your car should give you a good indication. However, if the color is non varnish beware of the effects of UV degradation of the paint. You therefore need to have a color sample pallet where you can verify the color of your car with the color samples available. That of course can only be done if all contamination and oxidation on the paint is removed. That can only be done by polishing the paint.
