Default 306 s16 head gasket repair

    Gday fellas,

unfortunately i have been told by my mechanic that i need to get the engine head gasket done on the s16. Im just wondering roughly how much this would cost? i need to weigh my options here considering 4 years ago i payed $1500 for a clean s16 motor from ASV.. should i undergo the headwork or just get the whole engine replaced . Also the engine idles at 2-3k on startup and doesnt drop below 2k, i have not inspected the vacum pods yet but does a leak in compression have anything to do with the car overreving?

please share your thoughts any help is much appreciated cheers!

I was looking for a good engine like that recently (series 2 mi16) I couldn't find a good one. I now am driving a series one saving up the funds to completely rebuild it!

How many KM's has the motor done?

Pending that you are an OK DIY'er - it's not that bad of a job!

Yeah they are very hard to source , ASV stocks them from time to time but be prepared to give up an arm and a leg in the process

the engine has done roughly 190,000kms .. Im a good DIYer however ive learnt from many mistakes, that were costly .. any idea roughly how much it will cost in a garage and how much i can save doing it myself ?

How badly blown is the head gasket?

A tin or two of chemi-weld may stem the flow for quite a while whilst you save up for a rebuild or find another motor.

I'd be tempted to try a tin and see how you go! I've always had great success with it.
