    Icon11 Seat belt won't unlock, 505

This might seem a trivial issue but I'll ask anyway. The drivers seatbelt on my 505 (GTi, series 2) has locked in place and despite efforts to fiddle with it I cannot get it open. Being a retractable belt I have been slipping it over my head for now but it means no lap belt part is in use and it wouldn't be 100% safe or roadworthy.

Is there a trick to getting them open when this happens? So far I can't see how I could even disassemble the locking part to get it open that way. I guess I might need to replace the entire seatbelt unit?

Sometimes the passenger seatbelt in my 505 locks (usually with the girlfriend in the seat!). Every time sofar it has been because it hasn't been pushed in properly. So as much as she fiddles with it, she can't get it undone. I simple lean over, push the seatbelt in all the way (usually takes a bit of a shove to get it to move), and then it unclips as usual.

I hope your problem is as simple!

    Mike.
    Thanks Mike....

Written from my lap top, been stuck in the car for three days now ...

I had another fiddle with it today, and a blonde moment where I thought to swap the drivers side bit for the passenger side one but then it would still be stuck, only to the passenger seat fitting. Tried lubrication but no luck, might have to break it open!

    Default 505 Seatbelts

Yep, my 505 GTI wagon driver's side belt gets stuck also. Mine has a loose piece in it which fails to move horizontally out of the way when you press the button sometimes. I think that it is spring loaded. I get it undone by knocking the whole thing sideways against the centre console to make that bit move. It tends to work. I do have a number of spare seatbelt bits though and so I should just replace it.

Empty a can of contact cleaner into the assembly and let dry. (jiggle and see if it moves).

Then puff into the slots.... lots of graphite, (yes its messy but it worked for me when mine stuck). Wipe off excess an look for a replacement latch unit. (generally the passangers side is used less and is in better condition than the drivers one).

This is a very common problem. Funny how Series 1 seat belts are much better designed.

I have a spare stalk if you need it.

    Mike.
When I played the youtube clip it had a recommendation for the clip in Pulp Fiction regarding Jules' wallet the BMF one. Anyone of the AFers able to direct us to a source of 'Bad Mother Froggers' wallets if possible!
Of course with a beautifully coloured amphibian Pond mark.

p.s. Thanks Mike you always seem to bring a smile to this hairy face.
