    Default 405 engine choices

    G'day fellow froggers
A mate of mine has a 1999 405 1.6 manual (208k km) which has quite a few issues. He had the intention to sell it to get a new daily driver that would take some beating but I talked him out of it and convinced him to restore his 405 specially since he had it since new.
We are thinking of doing an engine swap (he wants something more powerful than the 1.6 and most importantly an AUTO), so, can the 2.0L petrol from a 406 work ? There were also 2.0L fuel injected 405s AFAIK
So, what would be a reliable and at the same time powerful choice ?
Would the suspension and brakes need any sort of upgrading ?
Opinions would be much appreciated and thanks in advance
Here are some photos of his engine bay ...

How About a V6 ? It has been done and you will need a donor car for the ECU, Electrics and driveline. Most V6's came wit the automatic gearbox and this in a 405 would fly

    A V6 from a 406, right ?
Will it be a direct swap ?
I would think that the fuel consumption would be a bit high for a daily driver

True, the V6 would not be the most economical daily .... Its a tight squeeze as you can see from the picture but it has been done. You need to get the 605 V6 engine mountings. You can use any older V6 from the Xantia, 406 / 406 Copue and 605.

I have seen a V6 in a 205 but that needed a lot of modification as you can imagine.

Another option would be to fit a 406 2.0l 110 hdi with the 4 speed auto. Thats if you can find one as most early 406 hdi's were all manual...

The 406 auto gearbox is horrible, nothing but problems. Lots of 406 diesel taxis in Greece, with manual they seem to go on forever and engines are plentiful and not expensive. An Mi16 or 306 S16 engine would also be a nice option but remember that these engines are now getting a bit long in the tooth.

I think he nevertheless might like the power of a V6 and sacrifice fuel economy and expensive road taxes, we'll see, thanks for the idea.
We only want petrol, so HDi is out.

I always heard horror stories about the AL4 although the one in our 2.0L 406 seems to be going fine (over 140k) with regular oil changes and using the PSA gearbox oil.
Believe me I tried to convince him to stick to a manual but his problem is that he is going to drive a lot during rush hours and he's had enough from torturing his left foot .
We don't have 306s over here so this rules out the S16. The Mi16 might be nice (you mean the 200hp engine, right ?) but spare parts availability might be an issue. Thanks Thanos

He was more than satisfied to the idea of fitting a 406 2.0L (137hp) petrol engine (which is a common car and spare parts are readily available) and that would give him a 40hp difference ( his 1.6 is 96hp), so anyone knows if this is a direct fit ? Has anyone tried it ?
I also know that there is a 2.0L 405 engine available over here with A/T only, anyone knows anything about it ?

Found these engines available, the V6, 2.0L 406 and 2.0L 405 all with auto boxes.
Can the suspension be upgraded using sister models' parts ? (like when people fit 505 suspension parts to the 504 for instance)
