Default Peueot 306 XT N5, Exhaust note?

    I just took ownership of a 1997 Peugeot N5 306 XT 1.8L.
I think its a fantastic little car. I do have a question regarding the exhuast note/tone of this particular model.

The car is stock standard with a full service history with 132 000KM's on the ODO.
The Exhaust note seems to be a little loud in the cabin for a stock car, it is bearable how ever it does have a distinguished note about it. Almost a sporty sound... The exhaust definitely isnt modified.

Is this usual for the Peugeot N5 306 XT 1.8L? Or are they generally quiet little cars?

    Thanks

Talking from my experience with a 1998 306 XT you've described exactly what I had. Didn't sound too bad at all but eventually became louder and louder. So I replaced the rear muffler before my daughter took it over and the noise went away : )

    Mine is noisy too. ( 1999 2.0L XT )

I think it has a tiny hole somewhere.

Funny you should say that. I've just had the very same thing happen but in my case it was a new front muffler that sent me from quiet to boy racer. It sounded initially like the muffler was leaking but it is fitted exactly right and doesn't leak.
Strangely, the car feels like it is more free-revving and seems to run more 'freely'. I'm sure it's all in my mind but I'm going to keep an eye on the consumption and see if that's the case.
