    Default 505 Gearbox conversion

    G-day

I was planning on putting a gti manual gearbox into my auto sli, so any input on the conversion would be appreciated. (As in bellhousings flywheels and clutchs etc)

    Cheers Oatsy

You need a manual box from an SLI, SR or GR along with flywheel, clutch gearshift etc.
The clutch is the only thing that will fit from a GTi.

Pretty sure you can't, something to do with the teeth on the input shaft gears.

That's right. More to do with the difference in the spigot end of the input shaft. The gti box has a short thick spigot, the xn has a longer thinner one. Meaning its not possible to just change bellhousings.

Then if you swap the input shafts over to suit the engine, then you need to thoroughly check the meshing of the input shaft gears. I think the difference is mainly indicated if the shaft has a seal or a scroll.

If the GR bellhousing you have is for a BA10, then there is no simple way to do it.

If you have one for a BA7 though, you can take the GTi input shaft to your local machine shop and have them extend the input shaft spigot by 10mm, and reduce the diameter from 17mm to 16mm, then reassemble the gearbox, fit the GR bell housing and it will all work. Clutches are the same between late XN engines and ZDJ engines.

If you have access to a lathe and a welder, I can give you more specific information if you need it.

If anyone has a spare BA10 bell housing, I NEED ONE - I have two boxes, both without bell-housings - dont ask why!

If it is so hard to change the gearbox how hard would it be to change the 2.2L gti engine and manual gearbox from the gti into the sli?
