Default Gear disengage in 505 GR gearbox

    G'day AFers
Yesterday we were driving a friend's 505 GR doing about 80 Kph, and he was on the phone so I was helping with the shifts at that moment the sound of the engine went down so I disengaged 4th and engaged 5th very easily. Next thing he hung up with the caller and started staring at me ... he swore he HADN'T ENGAGED THE CLUTCH !!!!
After a few trials here is what we reached: if he accelerates in any gear and then quickly removes his right foot and we try to disengage the gear, it disengages, but with his foot on the gas pedal, it is impossible. And we couldn't get it to engage without clutch so apparently it was by luck, but what astonishes me that it made no binding sound AT ALL.

So, are we going crazy or are the synchromeshes going weak or is this normal ?

    Cheers

It's fairly easy to drive a 504/505 without the clutch if you are careful. My son does it regularly to stay in practice.

Years ago when many trucks didn't have syncromesh it was common practice for the gun drivers to only use the clutch to take off and then change the gears on revs alone. If it done correctly then the gearbox suffers no damage, if it is done poorly then the life of the box is severely compromised.

We still often bring home cars with clutch problems, things like broken forks etc, by starting them in 2nd gear and working up and down on revs.

Doesn't sound like there is anything unusual about your friends car.

    Cheers

Learned to drive in a truck without synchro - have driven a 404 from the centre of Brisbane to Sunnybank without using a clutch, also, a 505 from Bulimba to Marburg (west of Ipswich) without a clutch once you get started ( a bit hard on the starter ) it is just a matter of coordinating the revs

You just happened to get it right on the day

    Thanks mates, that's relieving
My friend was starting to panic thinking that he had a gearbox overhaul awaiting.
