    Default My s3 205 gti...

Well today i bought a new battery and earth kit as my gti had been stood for several weeks looking sorry for itself..

I took these pics today (note it hasnt been washed or polished).

I took the time (whilst it was off the road) to sort the tailgate out with the slatted grill i got instead of the red reflective strip which i hate lol

    Anyway here are the pics

Beams do t seize out here in OZ gezza, they just wear out for age and use. Jack the rear up and move the wheel about for movement. Bet it moves.

I reckon it needs some work too. The space between the wheel guard looks damn close on the back.

Nah its fine slightly low due to worn or slightly worn bushes.

May do em at some point but its not an issue at all, beam moves exactly how it is supposed to

Ya learn these things when you own have owned 10+ 205 gti's

My 205 has covered 131k form 1992, and its beam is the best ive seen. Still has movement that why its hard to believe. If you grab the wheel with both hands and lift it in a 360 degree direction the will be a knock somewhere. If not, I stand corrected and my stubborn opinion will be blast!

Car looks great by the way.

I may try that but tbh its been pampered all its life (regardless of km's), Were virtually every 205 has the hairline cracks above the rear windows... Mine is still like it left the factory not a single line or crack (and you can always tell if they have been filled in/repaired to hide this) and everyone knows if they are there, the car has had a flogging round the twistys/tracks at some point...

That in turn will also mean rear beams/suspension etc has had a hard time too.. hence they get movement and play in them then beams need rebuilding, I mean yeah they do need rebuilds with age but driveing the car spiritedly will bring it on earlier!!

Really nice car Gezza. Wrap it in cotton wool, in a car bubble, up on stands for another 20 years so we can all marvel at it later.

    Lol!!

It probably has had a little floggin or 2 but its 100% had an easy life, if you ever do see it you will realise this just by the condition of it.

Over the years as most people on here will know I have had 12 and looked at 1000s of these for myself friends and family and I can honestly say despite its km's its one of the better ones without a doubt.

I remember looking at them back in 1992 ( I was 18 then and at college and craved for one). and I have been checking them out ever since at car dealers private sales etc

And besides the brand new ones, I saw I never came across any that didnt have any body flex marks on it or rot..

How many owners can say that??

Anyone who thinks there original rear beam is in good condition is kidding themselves. The longer you leave it the greater the repair bill will be. Leave it long enough and the needle roller cage will break up and rollers will destroy the tube. Do it as preventative maintenance and you might get away with just replacing the bearings. Even 306 beams are wearing out now.

I am kinda surprised about just how many GTI's are in existence in OZ. They were $40Kish new? for a tiny car that had bits of plastic falling off and sqeaking from the beginning?
My mate at uni had a new1991 Suzuki Swift GTI for 18K and many technical aspects of it were light years ahead of the 205. The Suz was, and still is, a disposable rollerskate, but still...it had a lot to offer for half the price.

The swifts were a bigger hit over here than the gti's, shame really as there may of been more imported with the better colours too....

As for the beam it will be left, why fix what isnt broke??
If it needed doing then i would get it done.

Oh and actually going thru my receipts the beam was done/reconditioned in 2003 by eurocar 50k ago.

Its has full and complete service history from eurocar from new.

Very neat. I owned an identical looking one in the mid 90's. Mine had the reflective panel on the rear hatch which set it off nicely. Like the rest of the car the panel was held on with sticky tape but luckily I never lost mine ....

    Cheers
