    Default Mi16 with 306 Starter

I had trouble with hot starting ever since the Mi16 transplant. For some reason the 205 & the 405 starter just would not crank when the engine was hot.

JR suggested to get a 306 2.0l starter. I since find out that the 306 2.0L starter has planetary gearing and a higher wattage motor. So a few bills later it arrives to the door and here are some pics of the swap.

It cranks well but the car is still up on jacks so I will let you know if i have been successful.

So the D6RA series is the unit you just fitted, while the one with screwed in field coils and a rear stabiliser bracket is the old piece?

Yes that's right. The 306 unit is much smaller in size and 1.5 kg lighter.

They're a really common unit intrinsically (D6RA series). Even found on BMW bikes.

You could refer to my recent rebuild experiences for a demo of how comparatively simple they are to overhaul, too - that one can be rebuilt with UK-sourced parts when eventually needed, for less than $80.

Haha, like you addo, I bought new brushes from Woods in UK. I spun the armature on a lathe to tidy up the contact plate, gave it a clean, put it back on and worked better but still didn't have the crank when hot.

And every time, to get to the starter its-

    Grill off
    lights out
    bumper off
    cooling system drain
    radiator out

... but I have this down to 18 minutes now!

Now I have three of the larger 205 / 405 starters. one from the 205, one from the mi16 and one from a scrapped Si that looks 12 months off new!

My s1 mi16 had a 2.0 405 starter motor, because the mi16 one died and I couldn't find another mi16 one! Worked fine till the day the car died!
