    Default that part

That's pretty funny. When I first did the timing belt on one of these engines a few years back, I posted almost the exact same question. It took me ages to figure out where that bit went. You probably have to have the alternator loosened to access the bolt at the bottom of the cover on the right hand side below and behind the alternator - mind you, it sounds like yours is already.

    Good luck with it,

    1) Yep, I was pretty sure it was, but did not want to influence the replies

    2) No, I grew impatient and put all back together, well almost. Damn, the GTi's engine bay is not pleasant to work in.....

    Thanks fellas, more anguish avoided.

    Default Gti

The STI engine bay is worse than the GTI one - more plumbing. You should try replacing the heater hoses that come out of the back of the head behind the exhaust manifold in the STI - the metal fuel lines, the fuel distributor (and therefore injectors and air filter etc.) have to be removed to access the hose and it is still fiddly in there.

I have both and just refitted that exact same part to my GTI last week as part of the timing belt and oil seal replacement job. There was lots of black crud everywhere on this engine.

lot of engine bays from the 80's look a real mess, even the real wheel drive like the 505. I think it was the transition period moving from simple longitudinally mounted with carbs and no frills to transverse, electronic this, electronic that, anti-pollution etc. Packaging hadn't been perfected. Now it is ...... and ironically I ain't interested!

The main reason those engines were so filthy is because of where they put the distributor. It was so hard to get at, that it wasnt worth the hassle of running a hose with degreaser over the engine lest you get water in the dizzy.

Whinge, whinge, bloody whinge, what a bunch of girlies.

You can't reach the starter motor, the distributor's bad to access, you can't get at this, that and the something or other..........oh dear, I've chipped my nail varnish.......blah blah

This is what being tight for space means......

Sorry the pic's a little blurred, my feet kept slipping off the bumper.

Started out with nothing, still got most of it left.
