    Default 505 GTi question ......

I have just fitted a new head gasket on the 505 GTi and and up to the point of putting the ancillaries back on when I noticed a hole on the upper side of the water pump (see pic). I have not placed coolant in yet but it would appear to cause a leak. There is a rough surface at the outside and appears to be a spigot has broken off. However the Haynes manual indicates there IS a hole in this location.

What is this hole for/from? Was there spigot there that has broken?

Hi ade, I just took a photo of mine for you and if I am guessing the right part, mine has a hole there too. I also put a little piece of wire inside and it will hook under sideways as though it could leak ie the hole is vertical and to some degree horizontal; at its depth, if that makes sense.
Mine does not leak there, it is an '89 505 GTi, petrol, manual.
On mine there does not seem to be any broken off rough surface though.

ETA If you want any more photos or info to compare let me know.

That hole is on the outside of the seal in the water pump, between the seal and the front bearing. If there's coolant coming out of that hole, the seal in the waterpump has failed and the pump needs to be replaced or rebuilt. If not, all systems are go!
