Default Good Frog mechanics in Melbourne?

I rang Regan Motors today in regards to a basic service quote, and was quote around $250. This is a little pricey for me, as all i want done is a oil & filter change, and some new globes for the front headlights. Do any of you guys know of any decent places around the Hawthorn Balwyn area that know their Pugs and have decent prices?

I go to a guy in collingwood called peter danaher.
he runs a place called atc in collingwood.
he is the most honest, old school, reliable mechanic ive ever seen and has done my cars for 14 years now.
it dosnt matter wether its a peugeot of bentley he does em all and ive never had one complaint in 14 years.
ive sent numerous aussie froggers there and they all go back again and again.
for basic service he is very cheap and uses good penrite oil.
like most good mechanics he is sometimes busy though.
    ring him on 94199371.
i cant recomend him highly enough.
he is doing devlin's 205 gti gearbox at the moment and he does the majority of the work on my gti except when he is too busy and i need it done quickly.
    go see him .
you can get the filter from caravelle for around 14 bucks.
5 bucks for globes and about 35 for oil and 1/2 hr labour.
like to see where 250 comes into it but thats dealerships for you.

$250 for an oil & filter change, and some new globes for the front headlights which is what most anybody could do... that's a bit rich...

do we assume you own a 205gti? nonetheless, changing globes on any car is reasonbly simple. same goes for change oil and oil filter, unless its been tightened with an air gun!

if youd rather pay someone else to do it, go to any local mechanic. just let them know you wanna bring your own filter. and ask for a certain type of oil.

and purchase yourself a haynes manual coz theres no sense in paying someone to do a job you can do yourslef in minutes, regardless of how mechanically inane one is!

    $250 is a bit steep.

The dealer quote would've been along the lines of:

$30(ish) for each of the H4 Globes and $50 for the oil, filter and SPW...

A minor service through a dealer would probably involve the obvious engine oil and filter change. Removing, rotating (and possibly - but not probably - balancing) the wheels. Checking the brakes/hoses/belts all round (to try and get a bit more money out of you) and they'd probably charge you 1.5 hours labour at $80? an hour (it'd probably take only half that and be done by an apprentice)

They'd probably also charge you $20 or so in 'workshop supplies' which would justify the washer additive, and the topping up of gearbox and power steering fluid...

That adds upto about $250 which is what you were quoted...

It's just how the industry works...

The real cost of the service to a dealer would be:

    Globes - 2 x $15 (30)
Oil - $5 (unless it is a specific oil, it is usually delivered in bulk and works out to SFA)
    Filter - $10
    SPW - 50c
Labour - $25 (mechanics wages are a disgrace in this country)
    Workshop supplies - $1-5

Basically they'd make close to $180 profit dollars out of a 45 minute service...

It is quite easy to see why manufacturers are spending so much advertising money on trying to get customers to use 'authorised dealers' for their servicing...

It could be worse. You could drive a $AAB...

Mind you changing the headlight globes on a 205gti is a right royal pain.

    Richard;

either you get very cheap oil or the sump in a Feugo is quite small.

I highly recommend Auto Paris in Box Hill - 4 Rowern Crt, 9890 8822.

Paul and Danny who own and run the business know pugs backwards, and I've always found them to be honest and reasonable with their pricing.

Have you ever got a price on a bulk delivery of engine oil?

about 7 years ago it used to work out at about $1 per litre for the normal Castrol stuff used by a Melbourne Saab Dealer.

A 205 holds how much oil?

I suppose with inflation it could be $2 a litre now

My dad had always taken my 505 to Theo at Warratah Motors in Ascot Vale. I think he used to be the foreman at City Peugeot. He is always flat out and perhaps this says something for him, but the work he's done on my pug has always been top notch and honest, explaining exactly everything that he's done, showing me every part that comes out of the car and every part that went in and how much each part cost to install as I usually supply all the parts myself. A nice guy. Anyone else know Theo?

Peter at ATC in collingwood is a fantastic Mechanic. He's finished my gearbox and I'm loving it. Also very convenient for anyone who works near or in the city.
