    Default 505 GTI wagon

    I have been asked to help a young driver in a dispute with an insurance company over whether a 505 GTI wagon is a performance car. Can anyone help by providing the factory figure for power output in kilowatts?

    Hi

    Factory spec show 87kw with 177nm, all for a car weighing 1,405 kg

    Not what you would call a performance car.

    Thanks Matthew. That's very helpful. I don't suppose you can put your hands on the acceleration figures? It might help prove the point.

    peugot 505 is a pure family car they must be confused with other gti
    peugeots like 205 306 and 206 which are more sporty why doesnt he go check shannon insurance on 134646 they will insure a car like this and i am almost sure they will be cheaper

    FOR MANY years Peugeot has offered a station-wagon version of its bigger cars that has appealed to Australian buyers on a few fronts. Some buyers are predisposed towards Peugeot vehicles; others like the ride and handling compromise; and yet others appreciate the sheer European-ness of the cars.

    But, the real attraction of a Peugeot station wagon has been the option of a third row of seats to make the vehicle a seven-seater. Peugeot actually called it an eight-seater, but seven is more realistic.
    And that, for many families, is great news since not everybody wants a people-mover or a four-wheel-drive when it comes to moving a larger-than-usual tribe.
    Fair enough, too, since both of those options involve plenty of compromises in terms of the driving experience and living with the things day-to-day.
    While the 405 has been the current model station wagon for some years, it's smaller external dimensions mean that seriously big families tend to cast the net a little wider to include the vaunted 505 station wagon.
    Of those, the pick of the crop were the very last versions, and of those, the best value can be found in the 505 GTi Wagon, which was sold here from 1987 until 1990.
    The GTi Wagon benefited from the 505's rather weedy, carburetted two-litre engine being flung in favor of the hotter, 2.2-litre fuel-injected engine from the GTi sedan.
    But don't think this turned it into a road burner. Progress was still adequate, rather than stirring, and the engine was hardly a silky smooth unit.
    It made plenty of noise when it was revved hard, and that was fairly often since working it hard was necessary to get any meaningful forward progress.
    As such, the five-speed manual gearbox fitted to many examples sold here is the way to go. The gearshift action isn't perfect, with long throws and a slightly vague feeling, while fifth gear is really the reserve of higher speeds and flat roads.
    Even so, highway cruising is where the 505 really does shine and if you can live with the leisurely performance around the suburbs, and in the cut and thrust of city driving, then the relative lack of outright performance won't worry you a bit.
    The long, long wheelbase ensures that fore-aft pitching is all but non-existent, even with the relatively soft suspension that allows for an excellent ride.
    Handling is better than the ride would suggest and, even though there's plenty of body roll, the chassis never loses the plot and corners with a good deal of determination.
    Steering feel isn't the best in the world, but there's no mistaking the fact that you're sitting in something designed by people who know how a car works.
    As a point-to-point interstater, there's not much around that will seat seven and be anywhere near as good as the 505 Wagon.
    As well as the perkier motor, the GTi scored alloy wheels and twin chrome roof-racks for some visual aggression along with power steering, power windows and central locking in an attempt to justify the high asking price of $53,680 at a time when the brand-new, all-singing, all-dancing VN Holden Calais was just over $31,000.
    In reality, the only thing that made the 505 sell at all was a hard-core group of Peugeot fanatics and the fact that the car was pretty much the only game in town when it came to seven-seater wagons.
    Ultimately, though, it's those two factors that have kept prices where they are, and you'll still need the best part of $20,000 - or perhaps a little more - to secure a GTi wagon.
    The good news is, despite the car's unquestioned ability to cover big distances in a single bound, most examples will be yet tocover more than 100,000 kilometres. Given Peugeot's track record for durability, that means you could pretty safely expect another 200,000 kilometres before anything expensive goes bang.
    From 1990 to 1993, Peugeot sold the successor to the GTi, which was mechanically the same (although automatic only) and was simply called 505 Wagon. The later model lost the alloy wheels but kept the rest of the standard equipment, which, in 1992, was upgraded to include climate control air-conditioning.
    The big news, however, was a major axing of the price tag, with the new model debuting at $44,990 and actually falling to $43,480 by the time the 1992 model year rolled around.
    Prices for those cars now start at around $22,000 and stretch to $25,500 for a five-year-old car with just 60,000 kilometres on board. Apart from the fact that it was built in 1993, a low-mileage 505 Wagon represents quite a bit of car for the money and an accomplished family mover.

    Paul,

    I did the price comparisons of all the major insurance companies on the computer and found that Shannons was the cheapest (for a 406 V6).

    I rang Shanons and they immediately said, "I think we can do better than that..." and they did.

    They actually know what you are talking about when you describe your particulat model.

    BTW, the Peugeot Car Club of NSW has very close ties with Shannons...
