    Default s16 uh-ohs

    Hi everyone

My brother needs some advice regarding his s16, hope someone can help...

Since buying his car a month ago, his car has been spewing out coolant after he stops, appox a litre or so each time, which initially we thought that at some stage in the past the previous owner had let the system run dry and put an air pocket into it. We topped it up and bled it hoping that that was that..

This didnt work so we took it to the mechanic who has diagnosed a small head gasket leak that is pressurising the system under load and pushing the coolant out the overflow, he tested the radiator cap which was fine, and the engine temp is normal. This makes sense to me, but i wish that it would be something easier.

I was wondering if someone has had a similar problem (dave) and any opinions differing from head gasket.

    Thanks

    Dan

you can buy little head test kits, kinda like the spa/pool clorine testers

Is that something you dip in the radiator?
do you reckon that would detect a small leak?

No one has had any issues regarding head gaskets? This job costs a lot of bread so if anyone has an opinion.....

We're takin it to another mechanic to check out but it is on a waiting list so anything we can try surely wont hurt it!

    thanks

Probably there is a small leak in the coolant hoses or the rubber stoppers on the engine block are leaking...do a pressure test on the cooling system and that should sort it out...

    Thanks guys,

Thats who we'll take it to i think, we just put my rad cap on his car and it didnt loose any coolant but the mechanic tested his cap and said that it was holding 15psi which he said was more than enough.

Does anyone know what it should be holding? my cap is just the normal one.

    thanks

I had a radiator cap issue with my S16. I had the original one replaced with a basic generic type as it was a bit old and it seemed to fit well and not leak, however as soon as the engine stopped the presure built up in the system as the coolant would not be circulating in the engine block and would spew out the radiator cap. I ordered a genuine one and the problem was fixed.

Thanks for that brad, we'll get the proper one tomorrow and also get the system checked out to make sure, fingers crossed as a blown head gasket would be a bad start with a great car

I've heard of an isse with S16s where a coolant leak occurs a few mins after the car stops and only if coolant levels are around 75%-100% (I guess there's more pressure with more coolant ?!??). It's caused by a seal between the plastic bits and the metal part of the radiator on the left site (passanger seat side).
