    Icon3 306 Auto Transmission

I find my automatic gear box a little clunky especially when slowing down. Is this common with the 306? And can anyone recommend a simple solution?

It's a common trait with all PSA slugomatics......

This is not normal, nor is the 306 box made by PSA- it is a ZF gearbox.

Changing the fluid from dexron 2 to dexron 3 spec will cause it to do this (and a few other bad things) which will eventually ruin the gearbox.
Changing it back will help soften the shifts. In good condition they are very smooth and have almost unnoticable shifts.

I'm a little concerned. Before i take my car for a service can you describe what a few other bad things may be?

    cheers

some fuilds can be corrosive... so they will eat away at bits in the gearbox... it's very common... dad's v8 2004 explorer had the same problem...

Basically if the fluid is incorrect then the linings may slip or grab and wear themselves out, the ZF is fairly expensive to overhaul.
Check the manual, some later cars are apparently fine with d3 fluid.

The other thing which may cause jerky shifts is an incorrectly adjusted governor cable, but these don't usually go out of adjustment.
