    Icon9 I cant find one?

    Heya,

For the last month or so, Ive been looking for a N5 306 hatch and I have found absloutely nothing in the 10k price range. So this has got me thinking - Am expecting too much for my price range? I'd just be happy with a XT 5 Door or even a Style if it was at the right price. Ive looked everywhere, bought the trading post, carsales etc etc???

Should I maybe widen my search - maybe look at other cars?

Anyone got some suggestions as to what I should do?

    Thanks heaps!

    Hey Stalled,

this is the first of the second biggest purchase type you will ever make.

Of course, broaden your search, the more info you have the better decision you'll make, if in another month, no N5 306's, then you ask again, maybe you got to look at 5 or 10 of something else.

You will still have to make a decision.

Point being, there's no hurry to find the best of what you want first time around, you'd like to, but you may not be able to.

You want, need, can afford a vehicle, within the time frame of 'have to' you will make a decision from what is best available to you.

If it is not first choice then that will be for next time.

    good buying

These ones are just over the $10K mark in Sydney, so probably have some haggle space with cash. Also these are a selection of manual trans cars only, not sure if you were looking for manual or auto.

Don't rush though, as all the time you don't spend on a car you are saving up. Probably have a look at something just out of budget, and something that may be within budget to see if it is worth your while saving the extra to get a better car.

    Good luck!

I think for 10k, you may be buying yourself some issues in a N5. A good '00 model style (1.8 16v) in manual should be about 11-13k. I noticed that one of links that simon posted had a style for $10,200, with only 79,000klm's on it, I'd almost bet there has been no timing belt change, so thats a $1000 straight up, although a good bargaining point.

Keep looking, but I reakon for an extra thousound now, you'll save heaps later.

    Buying a car is tough.

BTW, I am depressed at how little my car is worth now!!! I think I'd be lucky to get $11,000 even though its in good condition

That is tough - but its great for us buyers.. sorry.......

But having just purchased my own lil PUG, I am very happy - only had her 2 days if that.... and i am very happy.... These are quality cars! Although I have upgraded from an 83 Pulsar - so there is a big difference!!

So keep patient as I had been looking for months then all of a sudden you find one! So it will come to ya - but i was actually thinking i would have to spend around the 15000K mark and ended up getting a 99 xt 5door with only 42000kms for $12500 and they took a trade in on my 83 rust bucket.... (suckers) - so you seek and you shall find!!

My best sugestion thought is probably tradingpost.com and Drive.com especially the trading post check it everyday online as it does change and you have to be really quick - trust me i know!! Good Luck and have patience - as it well worth it when you get there!!

just try and wipe this grin off my face

Yeah, the ones which I have seen around my price range all have 70-80kms on the clock which means in now or in 6 months I will need a cambelt change which will push up the cars price even more. As much as I would like a car with minimal initial mechanical costs, it just doesnt seem possible in this price range.

I suppose ill just have to be patient and keep a cool head about things!

    Thanks!

Its done a fair amount of K's. I think Stalled would be better of waiting and buying a lower K model. - Chris

ps, but your right that IS a good price, if the rest of the car hold true, not many in white!

Yeah, i have seen it online forsale but 160k certainly is a fair few km, Id prefer somthing with less on the clock. Also, the GTI-6 I would imagine to be rather expensive to insure at my age.

Ahh cheers for looking out for me!

look under clarifications, it's definately a 3 door style....

I hate to say it stalled, but you're looking for to much with not enough money. A good late model 306 will be $5k at least on top of what you've got to offer, and if you're not going to look interstate, then well you're really limiting your choice of cars

I hate to say it, but in that price range the closest thing your going to get is a 3 door style.

Maybe you should save a bit more money, or maybe look for something like an S16.

Either that or maybe you could look at 205's, you could fit a series 3 into what you're willing to pay

Yes, I see that but there are a couple of things that stand out plain as day. Firstly, the 306 is clearly a Style. Secondly, the owner confirms it is a petrol down the bottom of the page.

    Hey stalled,

I'm in a similar boat to you, been thinking of a late model 306 as well. Differences being this would be my second car, I want to spend a bit more than you and I'm not actively searching at the moment.

Have you compared prices with 206s? I'm not sure if you have your heart set on a 306, but when I search for '00 or later model 306s (any manual variant) and 206 GTis on drive.com.au they are all in the same price range.

I'm quite amazed at how well these little cars have held their value

Just wondering if you might find a base model 206 for around the same price range, might give you a bit more choice?

Late model Peugeots have a great knack of holding there value, I'm not sure on what the value of say a 206xr or something similar is but I cant see them being that cheap, and in comparison to what Stalled is looking at there pretty bland and boring (performance wise)

this seems like a decent 306 S16's in sydney i think you should have a look at, if not for any other reson then to get a feel of what an S16 drives like

    Hey thanks for that guys!

Yeah Im starting to think that maybe my I have set my expectations too high for the amount of money im willing to spend. Ive considered low priced 206's but I dont find them a comfortable car to sit in, I find the pedal placement poor and It really depends as to what shoe im wearing

I have called up about some 306's. The ones which I have spoken to the owners about either have fairly high kms and due for the timing belt change eg 160km mark. Others havent had the cambelt done at all

Im now at the point where im going to consider maybe a N3 306 as they seem alot cheaper around the 10k mark. That S16 looks pretty good for the price but mummy dearest is insisting that the car have an airbag so it rules alot out! Maybe a S16 might be the way to go if I could find one with an airbag - I have seen them around but Im worried about the costs involved with running one of these? I want a car which will be reliable and dependable - not somthing which will be sitting in my garage in pieces or at a workshop costing me many many dollars to fix!

Should I start to look at N3 models, I know they have the 1.8 8v motor which isnt doesnt exactly have a brilliant reputation for performance?

Anyways - Ill find somthing one day!
